The Stony Brook Seawolves meet the Vermont Catamounts in the America East championship Saturday.
The Vermont Catamounts look to revisit the NCAA Tournament with a win versus Stony Brook. The Catamounts knocked off New Hampshire 63-56 in the semis as an 8.5 point favorite for win number seven in a row. Vermont was up eleven at the break and coasted the rest of the way with the Wildcats failing to get their offense going on less then 36% shooting. UV countered with 45% accuracy with the deciding factor being a 13-5 advantage at the stripe. Ethan O’Day gave the Catamounts with 19 points and seven rebounds on 7-12 with Kurt Steidl adding 13 points and six pulls. The Top ranked Stony Brook Seawolves were supposed to be in the America East title game but they needed to rally from a DD deficit against last place UMBC in the quarters before downing Hartford 80-64 in the semifinals. The Seawolves were up five heading to the locker room versus the Hawks before pulling away over the final 20 minutes. The defense held Hartford to 41% with SB connecting at 46% with 12 more free throws to win easily. Carson Puriefoy paced the attack with 22 points and ten rebounds on 9-18 from the floor which included four bombs while Jameel Warney added 21 points and another 13 rebounds on 7-13. Lucas Woodhouse scored 12 points and posted six assists with Rayshaun McGrew and Ahmad Walker combining for 20 points.
I think the key here will be whether Stony Brook is slow out of the gates once again because the Catamounts aren’t UMBC and will make them pay. The Seawolves are loaded with talent but I honestly don’t think they have been focused. This might be reflected in the line when it’s released so please check back…
