The Savannah State Tigers square off with the Texas-Arlington Mavericks in in the CIT on Wednesday.
The Texas-Arlington Mavericks grabbed third in the Sun Belt before losing to Louisiana-Monroe in the semifinals of the conference playoff to end up with a 23-10 record. The Mavericks are well known for their fast pace and ability to score with good reason as they are #30 in the nation at nearly 80 points. Probably under the radar was UTA was solid defensively at 69.5 points allowed but opponents only sank 39.8% of their looks. The Mavericks will try to push the pace in the postseason and will be leaning heavily on the trio of Erick Neal (13 ppg), Jalen Jones 12.5 ppg) and Brandon Williams (11 ppg) to provide plenty of offense especially with Kevin Hervey and his 18 points out with a bum knee.

The Savannah State Tigers are not a household name in the world of college basketball and playing in a non power conference like the MEAC doesn’t help in the notoriety department. The 16-15 Tigers are the complete opposite of their counterparts in that they like to control the pace and operate in the half court and 62 points on 39.8% shooting says why. The defense allows 67.5 points on 43.3% so avoiding shootouts is a priority. Savannah State will still need to find some offense even if they control the scoreboard and Troyce Manassa and Chris Martin are the only double digit scorers at 12+ points. Lenjo Kilo is at 9.8 points and if he and a few others can squeeze out more scoring the Tigers would be delighted.
Texas-Arlington are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 road games and are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games overall. Whoever controls the pace covers and if the Mavericks can get out to the early lead I like them although this spread is ugly…
