The Columbia Lions host the Ball State Cardinals in a CIT quarterfinal on Wednesday.
It hasn’t been an easy road to the CIT quarterfinals for the Ball State Cardinals with a pair of overtime victories but perhaps the team has momentum after coming back from a double digit deficit in the final minutes to defeat Tennessee- Martin 83-80 Sunday. The Skyhawks held a 45%-39% shooting edge with Ball State totaling nine more looks at the basket thanks to a +15 on the backboards. Sean Sellers and Bo Calhoun paced the Cardinals with 17 points apiece with each grabbing five and 12 rebounds respectively. Jeremie Taylor and Trey Moses netted 12 points each with Moses posting five yanks while Ryan Weber and Franko House combined for 19 points with House hauling in 13 rebounds.

The Columbia Lion Lions finished third in the Ivy League and since there is not a conference postseason the team an NCAA invitation was not coming. However a 22-10 overall record did get the Lions a bye in to the CIT quarterfinals which is a decent reward. The Lions are a solid offensive club at 76.4 points on 45.5% marksmanship so this was a top 100 unit. The defense allowed almost 69 points on 43.8% so the offense did have to produce because opponents had potential to score. I don’t see that changing which means star guard Maodo Lo and nearly 17 points will be on the hot seat with 13+ point scorers Alex Rosenberg and Grant Mullins joining him there as this trio has to com through.
Ball State are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 road games. Columbia has had a long layoff and I don’t know if that helps of hurts. By the same token Ball State has played in back to back overtime contests. Right now I’m looking at the points and will update…
