The UConn Huskies added to their impressive 2016 recruiting class with the commitment from 3-star recruit Christian Vital. The shooting guard from Oakdale originally committed to UNLV last year but later backed out after coach David Rice was fired. Vital also had offers on the table from Louisville and Iowa.
Vital gave the Huskies his commitment before the weekend and admitted that Kevin Ollie telling him he was remaining head coach at UConn was the final straw to seal the deal. Ollie, who won a national championship in 2014, is rumored to be a candidate for the Los Angeles Lakers head coaching job.

Vital is a talented shooting guard who can play either the one or the two. Vital plays with very high energy and has this aggressiveness to his game that really shows when he takes the court. Vital is a great athlete, has above-average ball handling and can stroke it from deep. In fact, Vital’s long range shooting is one of his trademarks and the main reason why he’s considered to be one of the more underrated recruits in this class.
With Jalen Adams and Rodney Purvis likely returning next season, Vital will be a backup guard as a freshman but could be the key guy off the bench to lead the second unit. Vital is instant offense and will help provide depth for the Huskies, something that wasn’t a strong suit last year.
Vital now gives UConn five commits in the 2016 class, as he joins Alterique Gilbert, Juwan Durham, Vance Jackson and Mamadou Diarra.
The UConn Huskies have a stacked recruiting class and some talent returning next year as well. Connecticut may be the frontrunners to win the AAC next season and are more than capable of making some serious noise in the NCAA Tournament with all this incoming talent.
