The Texas State Bobcats and FAU Owls open the 2016-17 college basketball season Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Texas State Bobcats have improved their win total in three seasons under coach Danny Kaspar and now hope to build on 15 wins. Kavin Gilder-Tilbury returns after averaging 12.3 points and four rebounds while Ojai Black averaged 7.2 points and 3.9 assists. Bobby Conley dished 1.2 assists per game and Maljhum McCrea grabbed 2.4 rebounds per game. Texas State lost a ton of production from last years squad and are certainly going to be a work in progress with a new team for the most part. However, Gilder-Tilbury is a very polished player and should be ready to lead the Bobcats in his senior season. Don’t overlook Texas State just yet, especially with a good coach leading the way. The Texas State Bobcats have split their last four neutral site games.

The FAU Owls have won a combined 17 games the last two seasons and hope a third year under coach Michael Curry will finally show more progress. Ronald Delph returns after averaging 10.5 points and 6.8 rebounds while Adonis Filer averaged 10.3 points and 2.1 assists. Jeantal Cylla grabbed 3.5 rebounds per game and Nick Rutherford dished 3.5 assists per game. The FAU Owls are certainly more experienced than they were last season and return two double-digit scorers, which is great news for Curry and his staff. It’s still baby steps for Florida Atlantic, a program that’s still very young, but the Owls should win double-digit games for the first time in three years. The FAU Owls have lost four of their last five neutral site games.
The Bobcats are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 non-conference games and 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall. The Owls are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 non-conference games and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall. The under is 6-0 in Owls last 6 overall and the under is 4-1 in Bobcats last 5 Friday games.
FAU returns most of its roster and that's an advantage it has over Texas State, a team with a brand new team and will need to find its key rotation. Early in the season I like to fade teams that are breaking in new rotation guys, as it usually takes a while to adjust. This is a more than winnable game for the FAU Owls, so that's the direction I'm taking here.
Give me FAU and the free bucket.
