The American Eagles will travel to play the Maryland Terrapins in a non-conference college basketball game on Friday.
The Maryland Terrapins come into the season ranked 25th in the country and will be hosting a much lesser team to open the season. Maryland finished with a record of 27-9 (12-6) last season and made it to the Sweet 16, before losing to Kansas. Maryland welcomes back Melo Trimble, who decided to not go to the NBA, after averaging 14.8 points per game and 4.9 assists per game last season. Maryland did lose some key pieces from last season: Robert Carter Jr., Jake Layman, Diamond Stone, and Rasheed Sulaimon. Damonte Dodd will be one of the key pieces for Maryland this season after being a bench player last year. Maryland has some question marks regarding who will step up and take control of those minutes that are up for grabs, but the Terrapins should be a solid team once again.

The American Eagles come into this game after finishing tied for 4th in the Patriot standings last season. American finished last year with a record of 12-19 (9-9) and was able to get to the semi-finals of the Patriot conference tournament. Delante Jones (G) was able to average 12 ppg, 3.6 rpg, and 1.8 apg last season and is the team’s returning leading scorer. James Washington (G) is also returning after averaging 6.4 ppg, 1.7 rpg, and 1.1 apg last season for American. American lost their leading scorer and their 3rd leading scorer from last season. American should expect to be in the middle of the Patriot standings once again this season.
American is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 Friday games. The under is 4-0 in American’s last 4 non-conference games. The over is 11-3 in Maryland’s last 14 games on Friday, while the under is 19-7-1 in Maryland’s last 27 games overall.
Maryland should be able to handle this game at home, especially with the return of Melo Trimble. I like Maryland to put up a lot of points in this game, but these early games are always hard to predict.
