The Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks and Ole Miss Rebels open the 2016-17 college basketball season Friday night at the C. M. Tad Smith Coliseum.
The Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks look to build on their 20-15 record from last year and now have a new head coach in Anthony Stewart. Jacolby Mobley returns after averaging 10.8 points and 2.5 rebounds while Kedar Edwards averaged 8.2 points and 7.1 rebounds. Javier Martinez grabbed two rebounds per game and Fatodd Lewis averaged 1.6 rebounds per game. Tennessee-Martin is a new basketball team with much of their roster being turned over, as Twymond Howard, Myles Taylor and Alex Anderson are no longer around. However, the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks have five seniors on the roster and did show last year they can surprise folks in the Ohio Valley. The Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks have lost five of their last eight road games.

The Ole Miss Rebels look for a bounce back season after finishing 20-12 and tied for sixth in the SEC. Sebastian Saiz returns after averaging 11.7 points and 8.7 rebounds while Rasheed Brooks averaged 8.3 points and 1.6 assists. Marcanvis Hymon grabbed 5.2 rebounds per game and Donte Fitzpatrick-Dorsey shot 48.1 percent from the field. Ole Miss lost one of the top players in the SEC with the graduation of Stefan Moody, but Saiz is capable of keeping the Rebels relevant and Brooks should be able to build on a solid season last year. Mississippi also has a good coach in Andy Kennedy and will once again be a team you can’t look past in the improved SEC. The Ole Miss Rebels have won five straight home games.
The Skyhawks are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games and 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games overall. The Rebels are 9-2-1 ATS in their last 12 Friday games and 9-4-1 ATS in their last 14 games overall. The over is 4-1 in Rebels last 5 overall and the over is 3-0-1 in Skyhawks last 4 overall.
Laying this type of chalk in a season opener is risky given that teams are adjusting to a new roster, new rules, etc. However, Tennessee-Martin is damn near a new basketball team and is playing an Ole Miss club that usually plays very well at home. The Rebels are also far more talented than the Skyhawks. This may be one of those opening night blowouts.
