The Line: Pittsburgh Panthers -11.5 -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
The Eastern Michigan Eagles will travel to play the Pittsburgh Panthers in a non-conference college football game on Friday.
The Pittsburgh Panthers come into this season after finishing with a record of 21-12 (9-9) and losing to Wisconsin in the first round of the NCAA Tourney last season. Pittsburgh is able to return some talent from last season’s team and should be able to compete for another trip to the NCAA Tourney. Michael Young (15.7 points per game, 6.9 rebounds per game, and 2.3 assists per game) and Jamel Artis (14.4 points per game, 4.8 rebounds per game, and 3 assists per game) were the top two scorers for Pittsburgh last season and will be back for the 2016-2017 season. Sheldon Jeter and Chris Jones were the 3rd and 4th leading scorers for Pittsburgh last season and will be back for this season. As you can see, Pittsburgh has a lot of talent returning, but will have to adjust to a new system under a new coach.
USA TODAY Sports
The Eastern Michigan Eagles finished last season with a record of 18-15 (9-9) and was able to finish 3rd in the MAC West standings. Eastern Michigan lost in the second round of the MAC Tournament against Akron, which ended their season. Eastern Michigan also returns a lot of talent from their team last season, with their top 4 scorers coming back for this season. Ray Lee (15.1 points per game, 1.5 rebounds per game, and 1.6 assists per game) was the leading scorer from last season, while James Thompson IV (14.8 points per game, 10.6 rebounds per game, and 1.4 blocks per game) was the 2nd leading scorer from last year’s team. Willie Magnum IV and Ty Toney were the 3rd and 4th leading scorers from last season’s team, and will be back for the Eagles this season. With all of this talent returning, I could see Eastern Michigan having success this season and possibly winning a conference title.
Eastern Michigan is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games against the ACC. The over is 5-1-1 in Eastern Michigan’s last 7 non-conference games. Pittsburgh is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games against the MAC and 17-36 ATS in their last 53 home games. The over is 4-1 in Pittsburgh’s last 5 games against the MAC.
Pittsburgh is the much better team in this matchup and will be at home for this game. Eastern Michigan does return a lot of talent from last season’s team and should have a competitive team this year, but it won’t be easy to play at Pitt. As always, these early games are tough to figure out, but I will go with Pittsburgh here.
