The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and South Carolina Gamecocks open the 2016-17 college basketball season Friday night at the Colonial Life Arena.
The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs look to build on their solid 23-10 record from a year ago in the second season under head coach Eric Konkol. Erik McCree returns after averaging 16.2 points and 7.4 rebounds while Qiydar Davis averaged 10.6 points and 6.7 rebounds. Jacobi Boykins averaged 9.3 points and Derric Jean dished 2.2 assists. Louisiana Tech lost its top player in Alex Hamilton, but the Bulldogs are experienced and have three legit scorers capable of leading the way. Louisiana Tech has two seniors who are going to make a strong push this season for a C-USA title. The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs have split their last eight road games.
USA TODAY Sports
The South Carolina Gamecocks hope to build on a 25-8 record that led to a NIT berth in the fourth season under coach Frank Martin. Sindarius Thornwell returns after averaging 13.4 points and 3.8 assists while Duane Notice averaged 10.8 points and 2.4 rebounds. PJ Dozier dished 2.1 assists and Chris Silva grabbed 4.5 rebounds. South Carolina will be led by six upperclassmen and one of the better backcourts in the SEC. The South Carolina Gamecocks have a legit chance to be a surprise team in the SEC this season and have an experienced and proven coach leading the way. The South Carolina Gamecocks have won six of their last nine home games.
The Bulldogs are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Friday games. The Gamecocks are 21-6 ATS in their last 27 non-conference games and 16-6 ATS in their last 22 home games. The over is 8-3 in Gamecocks last 11 home games and the over is 4-1 in Bulldogs last 5 overall.
South Carolina returns enough players from last year to where it can build on its NIT berth and make a run at the big dance. The Gamecocks will be a team to watch this season in the SEC. The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs have talent as well, but they were shaky on the road last season and this won't be an easy game to start the season. I like South Carolina by double digits.
