The Line: Stanford Cardinal -4.5 -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
The Harvard Crimson and Stanford Cardinal open the 2016-17 college basketball season Friday night at the Mercedes-Benz Arena on ESPN2.
The Harvard Crimson have been one of the more consistent programs in the Ivy League over the years but won just 14 games last season. The good news for Harvard is that Siyani Chambers is back on the court after suffering a torn ACL a year ago. Chambers is one of the top players in Harvard history and is one of four seniors on this experienced club. Zena Edosomwan returns after nearly averaging a double-double last season and Corey Johnson averaged 2.6 made threes per game on 39.8 percent shooting from deep as a freshman. Harvard has the pieces to win the Ivy League and make an NCAA Tournament berth this season. The Harvard Crimson have won two of their last three neutral site games.

The Stanford Cardinal hope this can be a special season after finishing with a disappointing 15-15 record last year. Stanford has a new coach in Jerod Haase, who won 60.3 percent of his games in four seasons with the UAB Blazers. As for the players, Stanford returns four double-digit scorers in Reid Travis, Dorian Pickens, Michael Humphrey and Marcus Allen. Travis played just eight games last year due to injury, but he averaged nearly 13 points per game and shot 55.7 percent from the field. Stanford has the potential to be the bounce back team in the Pac-12 this season, but it all comes down to how well the Cardinal respond to a new coaching staff. The Stanford Cardinal have split their last six neutral site games.
The Crimson are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 vs. Pacific-12 and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The Cardinal are 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 Friday games and 4-9-1 ATS in their last 14 games overall. The under is 5-2 in Cardinal last 7 non-conference games and the under is 13-6 in Crimson last 19 non-conference games.
This should be a fun game between two teams more than capable of making the NCAA Tournament. Harvard is a serious threat when Chambers is on the floor and Edosomwan is one of the top Ivy League players. However, Stanford is loaded with offensive firepower and will be eager to make a strong start to the season after how things ended last season. I'll take the Stanford Cardinal and the reasonable line.
