The La Salle Explorers and Temple Owls open the 2016-17 college basketball season Friday night at the Liacouras Center on ESPNews.
The La Salle Explorers have nowhere to go but up after finishing 9-22 last year, which was the worst season under coach John Giannini. Jordan Price returns after averaging 19.2 points and 5.5 rebounds while Cleon Roberts averaged 12.9 points and 1.2 assists. Johnnie Shuler dished three assists per game and Tony Washington grabbed 7.4 rebounds per game. La Salle returns its top six scorers from a year ago and has just three underclassmen on its roster. Needless to say, the La Salle Explorers are extremely experienced and should be a lot deeper than they were a year ago. La Salle could be a surprise team in the A-10 this season. The La Salle Explorers have lost 11 straight road games.

The Temple Owls are coming off an impressive 21-12 season in which they made the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Obi Enechionyia returns after averaging 11 points and 3.8 rebounds while Josh Brown averaged 8.3 points and 4.9 assists. Trey Lowe grabbed 1.5 rebounds per game and Daniel Dingle dished 1.5 assists per game. Temple loses its top player in Quenton DeCosey, but the Owls still have some nice depth and will continue to be a quality team on the defensive side. Temple also has a 3-star recruit in guard Alani Moore, who averaged 20 points in high school and will provide the Owls starting lineup with instant offense. The Temple Owls have won six of their last seven home games.
The Explorers are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 Friday games. The Owls are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 Friday games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Explorers are 3-7 ATS in the last 10 meetings in Temple.
La Salle is going to be no pushover this season and I wouldn't be shocked if the Explorers got the win here on the road outright. But Temple is terrific defensively and still has enough guys from last years squad to inch this one out at home. I expect a close game, but the line is low enough for me to back Temple at home.
