Coming up on Saturday from the Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee, we’ve got college basketball action headed our way between the Charleston Southern Buccaneers and the Florida State Seminoles.
Charleston Southern is coming off a disappointing 9-21 season (5-13 in the Big South) for eighth place in the conference. The Buccaneers lost in the first round of the Big South tournament to Longwood.
USA TODAY Sports
This year, Charleston Southern retains their top scorer from last season in Armel Potter, who had averages of 13.8 PPG, 3.2 RPG and 3.1 APG. Potter will be joined by Raymond Robinson, who was third on the team last season with 9.7 PPG and 3.2 RPG. The Buccaneers will be missing second scorer Aaron Wheeler from last season, however, as he put up 11 PPG and 5.9 RPG in 2015-16.
Over on the Florida State side, they’re fresh off a 20-14 season, going 8-10 in ACC play to end up in a tie for eleventh place. The Seminoles got past Boston College in the ACC tournament but dropped the second round to Virginia Tech. In the NIT, Florida State got to the second round, losing to Valparaiso.
The Seminoles will be bringing back their top scorer from last season, Dwayne Bacon, who managed 15.8 PPG and 5.8 RPG in 2015-16. Xavier Rathan-Mayes will be back again as well, following his 11.8 PPG and 4.4 APG last year. Florida State’s second-leading scorer from last year Malik Beasley has moved on however, taking his 15.6 PPG and 5.3 RPG with him.
Charleston Southern is 4-1 ATS in their last five non-conference games, and 5-2 ATS in their last seven road games. The under is also 4-0 in Charleston Southern’s last four Saturday games, and 5-1 in their last six overall.
Meanwhile, the Seminoles are 4-0 in their last four home games, and 4-1 ATS in their last five Saturday games. Florida State is also 5-2 ATS in their last seven non-conference games, and the over is 4-1 in the Seminoles’ last five overall.
Florida State is retaining enough talent this year that they should come out of the gate strong with a big performance from Bacon and company. On paper, this is a Seminoles game and I can’t find a whole lot of reasons to call against that. I’ll take Florida State to cover any reasonable line.
