The Tennessee State Tigers and the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks will face off at the Leavey Center in the Cable Car Classic this Saturday night.
The Tennessee State Tigers picked off where they left off last season and opened their season with a 78-64 victory over the UC Davis Aggies last night. Tennessee State allowed UC Davis to come back from an early double-digit deficit but went on a 19-7 run in the last 4 minutes of the game to pull away and secure the victory. Leading the way for Tennessee State was Tahjere McCall who had 20 points (3-9 FG; 12-16 FT) to go along with 6 assists, 5 rebounds, and 5 steals. Wayne Martin also had an impressive double-double with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Tennessee State made one of the biggest turnarounds last year as the Tigers went from a record of 5-26 in 2014-15 to a 20-11 record last season which earned Coach Dana Ford to win the OVC Coach of the Year award. Tennessee State should once again be one of the better OVC teams this season as although they lost two starters including Keron DeShields (16.5 ppg, 3.3 rpg) they do have Tahjere McCall and Wayne Martin back who are projected to be 1st team All OVC this season.

The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks dropped their opening game of the season after being defeated by the Santa Clara Broncos, 67-64, last night. Northern Arizona was able to fight back after allowing Santa Clara extend their halftime lead early in the 2nd half with a 14-3 run, however, couldn’t retake the lead after Santa Clara went up by a 54-53 margin with just over five minutes to play. Northern Arizona was led by Jordyn Martin who had a double-double with 14 points & 13 rebounds and Jaleni Neely who had 18 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. Northern Arizona finished last season with just a 5-25 record which wasn’t surprising as Coach Jack Murphy’s lost both Jordyn Martin and Jaleni Neely due to injury and had to rely on mostly underclassmen throughout the season. Along with having both Martin and Nelly back, the Lumberjacks did return starters Ako Kaluna (12.3 ppg, 6.8 rpg) and Marcus DeBerry (7.8 ppg, 2.8 rpg) and will hope that Mike Green (8.0 ppg, 2.3 rpg) can continue to improve in his Sophomore season.
The Tigers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record and 13-6-1 ATS in their last 20 games overall. The Lumberjacks are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600 however, just 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games following a ATS win.
Tennessee State has looked like a different team under Coach Dana Ford and should be in for another good season if both Tahjere McCall and Wayne Martin can stay healthy. Northern Arizona should be a much-improved team than what we saw last season and although they couldn’t pull out a victory in their season opener, the Lumberjacks should be much more competitive with Jordyn Martin and Jaleni Neely back in the starting lineup. Tennessee State is the better team in this one however, Northern Arizona has had success in the past under Coach Jack Murphy, and I think double-digit points is just too much to give the Lumberjacks after seeing how they looked last night. Take Northern Arizona and the points.
