The Akron Zips will travel to Beeghly Center to take on the Youngstown State Penguins this Saturday night in College Basketball action.
The Akron Zips had an outstanding season finishing the year with a 26-9 record, however, Coach Keith Dambrot’s team had to be disappointed with how it ended as the Zips were upset in MAC Championship by Buffalo which costed Akron their ticket to the NCAA Tournament. Akron once again should be the team to beat in the MAC this season as although they did lose Reggie McAdams (11.4 ppg) and Pat Forsythe (8.6 ppg, 4.9 rpg), the Zips do return three starters in Antino Jackson (11.8 ppg, 3.5 apg), Noah Robotham (9.7 ppg, 3.7 apg), and Kwan Cheatham Jr. (7.2 ppg, 4.9 rpg). Akron is known for their ability to hit the three-pointer as they Zips were ranked 2nd in the country in 3-point FG’s made (11.7 per game). Akron will also be returning big man Isaiah Johnson (13.6 ppg, 7.6 rpg) who was selected to the preseason All-MAC 1st team.

Youngstown State once again had a tough season in 2015-16 as the Penguins finished the year with a 11-21 record while finishing 7th in the Horizon League. Head Coach Jerry Slocum does have one of the better players in the Horizon League in Cameron Morse (20.3 ppg, 2.7 rpg) returning. Morse will be joined by fellow returning starters Matt Donlan (13.1 ppg, 4.5 rpg) and Francisco Santiago (9.1 ppg, 4.1 rpg) however, the Penguins will no longer have Bobby Hain (12.4 ppg, 6.3 rpg) and Jordan Andrews (7.9 ppg, 2.8 rpg) in the backcourt. Youngstown State likes to play the game at a fast pace and averaged 76.2 ppg (ranked 99th) last season. For Youngstown State to pick up more wins, they’ll need to find some answers on the defensive end as they ranked 341st in scoring defense at 83.8 ppg.
The Zips are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 vs. Horizon League opponents however, are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 road games. The Zips are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings against Youngstown St.
Akron has been one of the best MAC teams over the past 5 years and this year looks like it will be no different as they have a loaded backcourt and one of the best big men in Isaiah Johnson. Youngstown State has a great scorer in Cameron Morse however, until the Penguins can find ways to improve on the defensive end, Youngstown State will continue to end the season near the bottom of the Horizon League. Akron has too many weapons for the Penguins to handle and as the Zips should be able to slow down the Penguins fast-paced attack, I’m taking the Zips to cover in this one.
