A pair of Pennsylvania schools face off as Penn State plays host to the Duquesne Dukes on Sunday evening.
The Duquesme Dukes opened their season on a high note with a narrow 65-60 victory over Loyola (MD). Tarin Smith led the Dukes with 13 points on 4 for 12 shooting with 5 makes on 8 attempts from the free throw line, and was the only Duke to reach double figures in scoring. Only 3 Duquesne players shot 50% or better from the field as Duquesne made just 24 of their 58 shots as a team on the night including 2 for 13 from behind the arc. The only saving grace for Duquesne in the opener was that Loyola shot even worse, connecting on only 23 of 63 shot attempts and missing more than half of their 17 free throw opportunities on the night. The Dukes will have to step their game up offensively if they want to go 2 for 2 to start the season against a Penn State team that is hungry to get a win under their belts.

The Penn State Nittany Lions dropped their season opener, an 87-81 home defeat at the hands of the Albany Great Danes. Penn State fell behind early, trailing by 16 at the end of the first half. The Nittany Lions were able to make a game of it, however the comeback fell just short in the end. Shep Garner poured in a team high 25 points on 8 of 19 shooting including 3 of 8 from behind the arc and a perfect 6 for 6 from the free throw line. Payton Banks and Tony Carr each poured in 14 points behind Garnet, with Banks knocking down 5 of 11 shot attempts and Carr putting in 5 of 15 to go along with a pair of free throws. It wasn’t so much what Penn State did wrong in the opener, as it was what Albany did right. They knocked down almost half of their attempts from the field, and poured in 7 of 14 threes while making 20 of their 25 free throws. As a team, Penn State is shooting just under 43% from the field including 36% from 3-point land and just under 82% from the foul line.
Duquesne is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 road games and 5-2-1 ATS in their last 8 vs. the Big Ten while the under is 5-2 in their last 7 games overall. Penn State is 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games while the over is 4-0 in their last 4 overall and 10-4 in their last 14 home games. The favorite is 4-1-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.
Duquesne got the win in their first outing, but it wasn’t so much as Duquesne winning it as it was Loyola losing it with their poor shooting. Penn State had all the momentum late but it was just too big of a deficit to overcome. If the Nittany Lions can come out firing early, I see them running away with this one, as they’ll want revenge for the last time these teams met, where Duquesne waxed Penn State by 26.
Lay the points with Penn State.
