The Siena Saints and the Cornell Big Red face off on Sunday in college basketball action.
The expectations are high for the Siena Saints this season as they return a lot of their best players from last year’s team losing only one of their regulars. Siena senior forward Brett Bisping is the leader of the Saints and he averaged 15.9 points and 10.4 rebounds per game last season. The Saints also return Javion Ogunyemi who averaged 14.9 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, Marquise Wright is back as well after averaging 14.5 points per game despite missing most of the season, and Nico Clereth provides the outside threat. Kadeem Smithen is a wildcard as he transferred in from Richmond and could see some action. Overall this should be a very good Siena team and they should compete for the MAAC title.
USA TODAY Sports
The Cornell Big Red started their season on the wrong foot losing by 6-points in their opener at Binghamton. Cornell shot just 34.9 percent from the floor and 13.8 percent from beyond the 3-point arc while grabbing just 9 offensive boards in the loss. Matt Morgan led the Big Red in the loss with 16 points and 8 rebounds before fouling out. Stone Gettings had 14 points and 9 rebounds for the Big Red, Robert Hatter had 13 points, and Will Bathurst had 6 points. Cornell always schedules big out of conference but I am not sure they were expecting to be facing such a stiff test in this game.
Siena is 1-4 against the spread against the Ivy League, 4-0 against the spread against a team with a losing record, and 10-4-1 against the spread in their last 15 home games. Cornell is 5-11-1 against the spread in their last 17 road games, 7-2 against the spread against the MAAC, and 3-7 against the spread in their last 10 games. The home team has covered the point spread in 4 of the last 5 meetings of these two teams.
Cornell has had the best of it in this series but it looks like it could be payback time here for Siena and I look for them to pound Cornell and win going away.
