The Eastern Michigan Eagles will travel to Moody Coliseum to take on the SMU Mustangs this Sunday afternoon in the 2K Classic.
The Eastern Michigan Eagles opened their season with a tough 93-90 (2-OT) loss to the Pittsburgh Panthers this past Friday night. Eastern Michigan did a great job of overcoming a 40-31 halftime deficit to force the overtimes however, the Eagles had trouble scoring the ball in the 2nd OT when the Panthers adjusted to a zone defense. Leading the way for the Eagles was Tim Bond (21 points, 2 reb, 2 stl, 2 blk) and Raven Lee (27 points, 2 reb, 3 ast, 2 stl). Eastern Michigan finished last season with a 18-15 (9-9 MAC) overall record however there is reason for optimism for Coach Rob Murphy’s Eagles, as Eastern Michigan returns a ton of talent and experience. Eastern Michigan lost only one starter from last year’s squad and returns James Thompson IV (14.8 ppg, 10.8 rpg) who has is predicted to be a 2nd team All-MAC player by the end of the season. Also, returning for the Eagles is Willie Mangum IV (12.1 ppg), Ty Toney (11.1 ppg, 2.9 apg) and James Bond (8.9 ppg, 4.1 rpg).

The SMU Mustangs started off their season with a victory as SMU easily defeated the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs, 72-44, this past Friday. SMU had a slow start in this one and was down by a 28-27 margin at halftime, however, the Mustangs turned it on in the 2nd half and outscored the Bulldogs by a 45-16 margin to pick up the win. Leading the way for SMU was Semi Ojeleye who had a double-double with 26 points and 14 rebounds. SMU and first year head coach Tim Jankovich will have their work cut out for them this season as the Mustangs lost key players in Nic Moore (16.1 ppg, 5.2 apg), Markus Kennedy (9.3 ppg, 6.3 rpg), and Jordan Tolbert (11.6 ppg, 8.5 rpg). Returning for the Mustangs this season is Shake Milton (10.5 ppg, 2.7 apg), Sterling Brown (10.1 ppg, 53.6% 3-PT FG), and Ben Moore (11.9 ppg, 7.4 rpg). SMU has to be happy with the early contributions from Duke transfer Semi Ojeleye and Ben Emelogu II and will need to contribute throughout the season if the Mustangs plan on making the NCAA Tournament.
The Eagles are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall however, just 8-18 ATS in their last 26 games following a ATS win. The Mustangs are 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 games following a straight up win of more than 20 points however just 4-10 ATS in their last 14 Sunday games.
It was a tale of two halves for SMU as the Mustangs looked like they could be in for a long season during the 1st half, however, looked like they could be one of the teams to beat in the AAC in the 2nd half. Eastern Michigan must be disappointed that they couldn’t secure the win in a close game, which was an Achilles heel for them last season, however, the Eagles behind Raven Lee and James Thompson IV should be in for a good season. SMU is a solid team however, I think Eastern Michigan is almost on the same level as the Mustangs and after their impressive offensive performance against Pittsburgh, I think the Eagles and the points are the play here. Take Eastern Michigan and the points.
