The Holy Cross Crusaders will travel to Colonial Life Arena to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks this Sunday night in College Basketball action.
Holy Cross finished the 2015-16 season with just a 15-20 record however, had an amazing end to their season as they won the Patriot League Championship as the 9-seed to advance to the NCAA Tournament and won their game against fellow 16-seed Southern before being defeated by the Oregon Ducks. Holy Cross and coach Bill Carmody should have a much better regular season this season as they only lost 1 starter in Cullen Hamilton (8.3 ppg, 2.3 rpg). The four returning starters for the Crusaders include Malachi Alexander (11.8 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 2.8 apg), Karl Charles (10.6 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 2.5 apg), Anthony Thompson (7.1 ppg, 2.5 apg), and Matt Husek (5.7 ppg, 2.9 rpg). Holy Cross will have plenty experience in the lineup and will hope that senior Robert Champion can have another solid season as he averaged 12.0 ppg and 4.8 rpg coming off the bench. Holy Cross will hope to improve their shooting this season as the Crusaders shot just 41.2% from the field last season which ranked 291st in College Basketball.

The South Carolina Gamecocks opened their 2016-17 season with a victory after defeating the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, 85-76, this past Friday night. South Carolina shot 52.6% from the field and 50.0% (9-18) from beyond the arc and was able to hang on after taking a 42-31 halftime lead. Leading the way for the Gamecocks was Sindarius Thornwell who had 18 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists. Coach Frank Martin helped led the Gamecocks to a 25-9 record last season but after winning their first 15 games, South Carolina struggled late in the season and just missed out on the NCAA Tournament. South Carolina lost some major pieces from last year’s team in Michael Carrera (14.5 ppg, 7.7 rpg), Laimonas Chatkevicius (10.2 ppg, 4.8 rpg), and Mindaugas Kacinas (9.9 ppg, 5.1 rpg) however, do have one of the best backcourt players in the SEC in Sindarius Thornwell (13.4 ppg, 4.8 rpg). Also, returning for South Carolina is P.J Dozier (6.7 ppg, 3.0 rpg) and Duane Notice (10.8 ppg, 2.4 rpg).
The Crusaders are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games and 6-1 ATS in their last 7 Sunday games. The Gamecocks are 20-6 ATS in their last 26 non-conference games however, just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games.
Holy Cross should come into this matchup with a ton of confidence with how they ended last season however, this is still basically the same team that lost 20 games last season. South Carolina has a great backcourt led by Sindarius Thornwell and although they’re a bit thin in the frontcourt, I don’t think that it will hurt them against the Crusaders. I’m taking South Carolina to cover this large spread at home.
