The Long Beach State 49ers will travel to Charles Koch Arena to take on the Wichita State Shockers in a Battle 4 Atlantis – Campus Game.
The Long Beach State 49ers opened their season with an easy 95-59 victory over the Cal State – Los Angeles Golden Eagles this past Friday. Long Beach State had little trouble with the Golden Eagles as the 49ers held a 51-38 lead at halftime and outscored the Golden Eagles by a 44-21 margin in the 2nd half. Leading the way for Long Beach State was Justin Bibbins who had 12 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals. Long Beach State finished the 2015-16 season with a 20-15 record including winning 11 of their last 14 games and should be the favorite to win the Big West this season. Long Beach State lost Nick Frost (17.4 ppg, 6.1 rpg) however, do return a lot of talent in Justin Bibbins (12.0 ppg, 5.0 apg) and Gabe Levin (9.5 ppg, 5.9 rpg). Long Beach State brought in a talented player in transfer Evan Payne (Loyola-Marymount) and hope that long-range specialist Noah Blackwell can continue to be a threat from beyond the arc.

The Wichita State Shockers opened their season with a dominating 85-39 victory over the South Carolina State Bulldogs this past Friday. Wichita State was outstanding on the defensive side and had little trouble picking up the victory after taking a 41-15 lead at halftime. Leading the way for the Shockers was Zach Brown who finished the game with 7 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. It was interesting watching a Wichita State team without Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet leading the way, however, Coach Greg Marshall’s Shockers still look poised to be able to crack the top-25 this season. Coach Marshall will be relying on returning starters Zach Brown (6.7 ppg, 2.9 rpg) and Shaquille Morris (6.8 ppg, 3.6 rpg). Wichita State will hope that Landry Shamet can return strong after missing the majority of last season due to injury and that former Kansas transfer Conner Frankamp can help provide a threat from beyond the arc.
The 49ers are 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight up win and 7-1-2 ATS in their last 10 non-conference games. The Shockers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 Sunday games and 18-7 ATS in their last 25 games overall.
Wichita State, even without Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet, will be an outstanding team as their defense and athleticism will make the Shockers once again the favorites in the MVC. Long Beach state has one of the better one-two combinations in the Big West in Justin Bibbins and Gabe Levin and if the 49ers can get contributions from Evan Payne, could be a team that no one will want to face in March. Playing at Wichita State is always a challenge, however, as I'm not convinced that the Shockers will be able to put up alot of points without Baker and VanVleet, I'm taking Long Beach State and the points in this one.
