The Northeastern Huskies will travel to Gampel Pavilion to take on the 18th ranked UConn Huskies this Monday night in College Basketball action.
The Northeastern Huskies opened up their season with an 87-77 victory over in-state rival Boston University this past Friday. Northeastern shot 55.1% from the field and had little trouble securing the victory after taking a 41-25 lead at halftime. Leading the way for the Huskies was T.J. Williams who had 30 points, 8 assists, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals. Northeastern finished the season with a 18-15 overall record but it will tough for Northeastern to compete in the CAA this season as they lost three of their best players in David Walker (17.9 ppg, 4.0 apg), Quincy Ford (16.4 ppg, 7.0 rpg), and Zach Stahl (10.6 ppg, 6.1 rpg). Coach Bill Coen will need to rely on his returning starters T.J. Williams and Jeremy Miller to take on bigger roles in the offensive. Northeastern will hope that freshman Shawn Occeus and returning guard Donnell Gresham Jr can provide an immediate impact for the Huskies.

The 18th ranked UConn Huskies suffered a shocking upset in their season opener after being defeated by the Wagner Seahawks, 67-58, this past Friday. UConn struggled offensively as they shot just 35.7% from the field and scored just 23 2nd half points in the loss. Leading the way for the Huskies was Terry Larrier who had 13 points and 7 rebounds. Head Coach Kevin Ollie lost four starters which included Daniel Hamilton (12.5 ppg, 8.9 rpg), Shonn Miller (12.3 ppg, 5.2 rpg), and Sterling Gibbs (12.3 ppg) from last year’s 25-11 team. Even with losing that much talent, UConn still is the favorite to win the AAC this season and will be led by Rodney Purvis, Jalen Adams, and Terry Larrier. The Huskies are a young team but UConn was able to bring in one of their best recruiting classes in years which was headlined by Alterique Gilbert who was a McDonald’s All-American and had 14 points in 35 minutes in the season opener.
The Huskies are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up win. The Huskies are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall however, are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games vs. CAA opponents.
Northeastern looked impressive in their win over Boston University, however, this Huskies lost the majority of their talent from last year’s team and should have a ton of matchup problems when facing UConn. The Huskies are a young team that might take some team to build some chemistry however, I think UConn will come out angry after losing their first season opener since 1999, and that they run Northeastern out of the gym in this one.
