The Illinois State Redbirds shoot for their first win of the young college basketball season against the IUPU-Ft. Wayne Mastodons.
After dropping their season opener to Arkansas, the IUPU-Ft. Wayne Mastodons destroyed the Kenyon Lions in what proved to be a mismatch from the opening tip. Ft. Wayne was never challenged as they opened a 59-21 after 20 minutes and never let up. The Lions only sank shots at 29.7% and were simply too small and not nearly as quick as the Mastodons burned the nets at 61.5%, including 11-20 from long range while holding a 47-20 advantage on the backboards. Leading Fort Wayne at the offensive end was Mo Evans with a game high 28 points on 11-13 shooting with Bryson Scott tossing in 17 points and totaling five boards. Charles Ruise Jr. gave the Mastodons 15 points with John Kochar tossing in eleven while Kason Harrell and Jordan King scored ten points each.
USA TODAY Sports
The Illinois State Redbirds had a tough season opener at Murray State on the road but couldn’t get enough second half stops in a 73-70 defeat as a two point favorite. The Redbirds held the Racers to 41% from the floor but their own 44% marksmanship and 18 turnovers were not winnable numbers especially with a 6-16 mark on three pointers being costly. Murray State also was a bit more explosive offensively as ISU was more or less a three man attack. MiKyle Mcintosh paced Illinois State in scoring with 18 points and eight boards on 6-12 followed by Paris Lee with 15 points on 5-7 while Deontae Hawkins dropped 14 points and hauled in a game high 15 rebounds but his 4-13 shooting hurt the offense overall.
Fort Wayne are 10-2 ATS in their last 12 Wednesday games and the over is 24-9 in Fort Wayne last 33 overall while Fort Wayne are 37-15-2 ATS in their last 54 road games. The under is 7-1 in Illinois State last 8 non-conference games and Illinois State are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 Wednesday games while the under is 57-26-1 in Illinois State last 84 home games.
Both teams are supposed to challenge in their respective conferences but the Mastodons have been cover machines in the past so I’ll take the points in a tough road assignment …
