The Prairie View A&M Panthers improved to 1-1 on the season after defeating the Fresno State Bulldogs, 84-78, this past Monday. Prairie View A&M was down by a 41-36 margin at halftime however, had a big 2nd half and used an 8-2 run late in the game to help secure the comeback victory. Prairie View A&M was outrebounded by Fresno State by a 43-29 margin however, did force the Bulldogs to commit 18 turnovers. Leading the way for the Panthers was Daquan Cook who had 17 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, and 2 steals. On the season, the Panthers have been led by Daquan Cook (15.5 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 1.5 apg, 3.0 spg), James Westbrook (13.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 1.5 spg), and Zachary Hamilton (9.0 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 1.5 apg). Prairie View A&M finished last season with just a 7-24 record but did finished with a 6-4 record down the stretch and as they return some key pieces from the 2015-16 squad, the Panthers hope that they can be more competitive in the Southwestern Athletic Conference this season.

The Saint Mary’s Gaels opened their season with an impressive 81-63 victory over the Nevada Wolfpack this past Friday night. Saint Mary’s raced out to a 42-29 halftime lead and never allowed the Wolfpack to get within double-digits in the 2nd half. Saint Mary’s shot an impressive 60.0% from the field and committed just 6 turnovers in the victory. Leading the way for the Gaels was Jock Landale who had 33 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 assists. Saint Mary’s comes into this season as the slight favorite over the Gonzaga to win the WCC. Saint Mary’s will have one of the most experienced teams in the country as the Gaels returned basically everyone from a team that went 29-6 last season. Leading the way for the Gales this season should be Emmett Naar (6.0 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 8.0 apg), Dane Pineau (6.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg), and Joe Rahon (10.7 ppg, 5.4 apg). The Gaels could become one of the best teams in the country if big-man Jock Landale can consistently provide production as he did in the Gael’s season opener.
The Panthers are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 non-conference games and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games following a straight up win. The Gaels are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 non-conference games and 11-4 ATS in their last 15 games following a ATS win.
Prairie View A&M has some reason for optimism after the way they finished last season and with their early season win on the road at Fresno State, however, the Gaels are one of the best teams in the country and playing well at the McKeon Pavilion is almost a near to impossible task to accomplish. This game is not currently lined and I wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t get line, but Prairie View A&M would have to get a boat load of points for me to even consider taking them.
