The East Carolina Pirates will travel to Halton Arena to take on the Charlotte 49ers this Thursday night in College Basketball action.
The East Carolina Pirates improved to 2-0 on the young season after defeating the North Carolina A&T Aggies, 61-51, this past Monday. East Carolina was outstanding on the defensive end in this one and had no trouble picking up the win after taking a 47-28 lead midway through the 2nd half. East Carolina held the Aggies to just 33.3% shooting from the field and outrebounded North Carolina A&T by a 47-33 margin. Leading the way for East Carolina was B.J. Tyson who had 13 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals. On the season, the Pirates have been led by Caleb White (16.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 1.0 apg), B.J. Tyson (12.5 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 6.5 apg, 2.5 spg), and Kentrell Barkley (11.0 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2.0 apg). East Carolina finished with just a 12-20 last season but we shouldn’t read too much into that record as the Pirates missed a lot of key players throughout last season due to injury. Returning for East Carolina are starters Caleb White, Michel Nzege, and B.J. Tyson. East Carolina also will have back to of their bigger bodies in Deng Riak and Clarence Williams.

The Charlotte 49ers improved to 2-0 on the season after defeating the Elon Phoenix, 100-95, this past Monday. Charlotte used an 18-4 run in the 2nd half to overcome a 6-point deficit and secure the comeback victory in this high-scoring affair. Charlotte was outstanding on the offensive end as they shot 50.7% from the field and 71.4% (10-14) from beyond on the arc. Leading the way for the 49ers was Jon Davis who had 22 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. On the season, Charlotte has been led by Jon Davis (25.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 3.0 apg), Braxton Ogbueze (16.0 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.5 bpg), and Hudson Price (14.0 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 1.0 spg). Charlotte has one of the better backcourts in the C-USA in Adrien White and Jon Davis however, the 49ers will need to find a way to replace their big man, Joseph Uchebo, who averaged a double-double last year with 13.2 ppg and 11.5 rpg. Charlotte is hoping that TCU transfer Hudson Price, who is the son of Head Coach Mark Price, and freshman Quentin Jackson will be able to be impact contributors for the 49ers this season.
The Pirates are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games and 6-0 ATS in their last 6 road games. The 49ers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 non-conference games and 10-2 ATS in their last 12 home games.
Charlotte has been on an offensive tear to begin the season however, I really like what Caleb White and B.J. Tyson have shown for the Pirates to begin the season and as I feel the East Carolina defense will be able to give the 49ers more of a battle than what they saw in their 1st two games, I’m leaning towards taking East Carolina and the points in this one.
