The Northern Iowa Panthers clash with the Oklahoma Sooners in the Tire Pros Invitational college basketball tourney
The Northern Iowa Panthers opened some eyes with their 82-63 victory versus Arizona State to stay alive and move in to move on to the next round of the Tire Pros tourney. The Panthers might have opened some eyes in the Missouri Valley as both their scoring and defense looked impressive as they slowly pulled away and the Sun Devils simply couldn’t keep up. UNI burned the nets at 51.5 and nailed 13-30 from beyond the arc while Arizona State was held to 41.5% from the floor. Jeremy Morgan was the Panthers star with a game high 20 points and 12 rebounds on 6-9 with Klint Carlson netting 19 points on 8-10 accuracy while Spencer Haldeman and Bennett Koch added 17 and 14 points respectively.

The Oklahoma Sooners are supposed to take a step or two back from last season for obvious reasons but I found it difficult to believe they possessed the talent to pull the upset. I looked to be wrong as the Green Wave played the Sooners tight until fading away in an 89-70 decision. OU were the far better marksman at nearly 52% with Tulane hitting at less then 42% which was a difference of seven baskets. Jordan Woodard was the Sooners offensive star with a game high 22 points, six yanks and seven helpers followed by Rashard Odomes with 15 points. Christian James added tossed in another 12 points while Khadeem Lattin and Kristian Doolittle combined for 20 points with Doolittle hauling in a game high 12 rebounds.
Trends between two teams that never face each other are supposed to influence us in a tournament? I do look at them but believe they have far more value during conference action. My belief is Northern Iowa is as advertised and Oklahoma is better then many think.
