The 25th-ranked Cincinnati Bearcats take on the 22nd-ranked Rhode Island Rams in the 2nd semifinal of the Hall of Fame Tip-off Tournament at Mohegan Sun Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The 25th-ranked Cincinnati Bearcats improved to 2-0 on the year with a 74-51 victory over Albany. The Bearcats got a pretty balanced effort across the board, as just 3 Cincinnati players scored in double figures in the game. Jacob Evans led the way with 5 of 11 makes from the floor, including a pair of 3-pointers while making 7 of 8 from the foul line. Kyle Washington poured in 6 of 8 on the night and probably would’ve had a better statline had he connected on more than just 1 free throw on his 5 attempts. Jarron Cumberland rounded out the trio with 11 points on 4 of 6 from the floor, including 2 of 4 from downtown for 11 points on the night. As a team, Cincinnati is scoring 79 points per game, while shooting 51.7% from the floor. What I’m sure head coach Mick Cronin is working on with his guys is improving the 3-point percentage which stands at just 25.6%, which leaves the Bearcats at 321st out of 347 D-I teams and the shooting at the foul line, where Cincinnati is making just 62.5%.

The 22nd-ranked Rhode Island Rams won their 3rd straight game to start the year, defeating Brown by a final score of 79-72. Jared Terrell led the Rams with 18 points on 7 of 11 from the field, including a pair of 3s and a pair of free throws as one of 4 Rams to hit double-digits in the win. E.C. Matthews followed closely behind Terrell with 17 points on 6 for 10 with a 3-pointer while going 4 for 7 from the charity stripe. Hassan Martin was highly efficient for Rhode Island, making all but 1 of his 7 shot attempts from the field for 12 points while pulling in 8 rebounds and Kuran Iverson rounded out the group with 3 of 5 makes from the floor, to go along with 5 of 6 from the foul line for 11 points. Jarvis Garrett found himself just one point shy of joining the group with 9 points, while no other Ram scored more than 4 points. As a team, Rhode Island is having a solid start to the season offensively, as they are scoring 90 point per game, good for 38th in the country, 53.3% from the field, good for 19th and 40.4% from 3-point range, good for 64th. The only improvement the Rams would want is probably from the charity stripe where Rhode Island is making just 67.1% of their shots.
Cincinnati is 0-4 ATS in their last 4 neutral site games and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 following a win. Cincinnati is 3-7 ATS in their last 10 non-conference games and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 neutral site games while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 vs. the A-10.
Neither of these teams have fared well against the number out of conference or at a neutral site. However, we are getting points with what I feel is the better team that should win this game.
Give me Rhode Island and the free bucket.
