Coming up on Sunday in college basketball action from Xfinity Center in College Park, the Towson Tigers will be meeting up with the Maryland Terrapins in a battle of undefeated teams.
Towson comes into this game at 2-0 so far, following wins over George Mason 67-61 last Saturday and Morgan State 78-72 back on Tuesday. The Tigers were down 30-25 at the half in that game, but came back with a 53-42 second half to seal the victory.
USA TODAY Sports
Through two games so far, Towson has been relying heavily on Mike Morsell and Arnaud William Adala Motto. Morsell leads the Tigers with 21.5 PPG and 6.0 RPG, while Motto is close behind on 20.5 PPG and 9.5 RPG. John Davis adds 8.0 PPG and 6.5 RPG as Towson’s next leading scorer.
Over on the Maryland side, they’re sitting on a 3-0 record here in the early-going, getting wins over American University 62-56 last Friday and Georgetown 76-75 on Tuesday, then posting a 93-45 win over Division III St. Mary’s Thursday. In that one, Maryland had a 54-22 advantage at the half, and followed it up with a 39-23 second half to seal the big win.
Melo Trimble leads the Maryland squad in scoring with 17.0 PPG and 2.0 APG, while Anthony Cowan is also averaging in double figures with 10.3 PPG and 6.3 RPG. Justin Jackson is the Terrapins’ leading rebounder on 8.7 RPG and 8.7 PPG.
Towson is 4-0 ATS in their last four road games, and 4-1 ATS in their last five road games versus a team with a home winning percentage of greater than .600. Towson is also 4-1 ATS in their last five road games versus a team with a winning home record, and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 non-conference games.
As for Maryland, they’re 4-1 ATS in their last five games after allowing less than 50 points in their previous game, and 2-6 ATS in their last eight games after scoring more than 90 points in their previous game. Maryland is also 6-19-1 ATS in their last 26 games following a straight-up win of more than 20 points, and the under is 4-0 in the Terrapins’ last four non-conference games.
Maryland showed some real mettle with a gritty 76-75 win over Georgetown, and gets credit for not coming out flat against the outmatched St. Mary’s in their next game. Still, with Trimble and Cowan providing the only consistent scoring, it’s not tough to imagine the Terrapins falling back a little here, especially if Motto and Morsell can control the paint. I like Towson to cover in this one.
