The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos will travel to Moody Coliseum to take on the SMU Mustangs this Tuesday night in College Basketball action.
The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos dropped to 0-3 on the season after they were defeated by the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners, 77-70, this past Saturday. UC Santa Barbara was tied with CSU Bakersfield at 62-all with just over five minutes led to play however, struggled offensively when game was on the line as the Gauchos went for a 3-minute span without scoring that allowed the Roadrunners to pull away for the victory. UC Santa Barbara outrebounded CSU Bakersfield by a 46-32 margin but had trouble protecting the ball and lost the turnover battle by a 21-9 margin. Leading the way for the Gauchos was Jalen Canty who had a double-double with 11 points, 12 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals. On the season, UC Santa Barbara is averaging 64.3 ppg on 38.5% shooting from the field and 25.0% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, UC Santa Barbara has been led by Gabe Vincent (16.0 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 3.0 apg), Eric Childress (10.7 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 4.0 apg), Jalen Canty (10.3 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 1.0 apg), and Christian Terrell (6.3 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.7 spg). Defensively, UC Santa Barbara is allowing their opponents to average 75.3 ppg on 41.8% shooting.

The SMU Mustangs had their 3-game winning snapped and dropped to 3-1 on the season after being defeated by the Michigan Wolverines, 76-54, this past Friday. SMU struggled offensively in this one and couldn’t fight back after falling behind by a 44-25 margin at the end of the 1st half. SMU shot just 37.3% from the field and 37.5% (6-16) from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Mustangs was Semi Ojeleye who had 13 points and 9 rebounds. On the season, SMU is averaging 73.3 ppg on 45.7% shooting from the field. The Mustangs are averaging 7.0 three-pointers per game on 36.8% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, SMU has been led by Semi Ojeleye (20.3 ppg, 9.0 rpg), Shake Milton (12.0 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 4.5 apg, 1.8 spg), Jarrey Foster (11.3 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 1.3 apg), and Sterling Brown (10.5 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 3.3 apg). Defensively, SMU is holding their opponents to an average of 62.8 ppg on 40.5% shooting from the field. The Mustangs have been outstanding on the glass early in the season as they have a rebound margin of 14.5.
The Gauchos are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up loss and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 road games. The Mustangs are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games.
UC Santa Barbara has one of the best players in the Big West in Gabe Vincent however, the Gauchos have really struggled offensively to open their season as they are shooting just 38.5% from the field, 64.4% from the FT-Line, and 25.0% from beyond the arc. SMU lost a lot of their scoring from last year’s squad which showed against the Wolverines, however, the Mustangs must be happy with the offensive output they’ve gotten from big-man Semi Ojeleye. UC Santa Barbara has gotten off to a rough start but the Gauchos are better than what they’ve shown and as the Gauchos defense could cause the Mustangs some problems, I’m taking UC Santa Barbara and the points in this one.
