The Iona Gaels look for their first win of the season as they take on the Drake Bulldogs in the quarterfinals of the Great Alaska Shootout.
The Drake Bulldogs got their first win of the season by defeating D-III Simpson College by a final score of 76-61. Reed Timmer led the charge for the Bulldogs with 21 points on 7 of 19 from the floor, including a pair of 3-pointers while going 5 for 7 from the foul line on the night. Ore Arogundade followed behind with 14 points on 5 of 9 shooting, including 3 for 5 from downtown and 1 of 2 from the charity stripe while Nick McGlynn rounded out the group as the 3rd and final Bulldog to hit double figures in scoring with 11 points after making all 3 of his field goal attempts on the night while going 5 of 6 from the charity stripe. Kory Kuenstling may not have had the most efficient night offensively, putting up just 4 points, but he did notch a team-high 9 rebounds in the win. As a team, Drake is scoring 70.7 points per game on 43.9% from the field, 28.6% from downtown and just 67.5% from the foul line.

The Iona Gaels fell to 0-2 to start the year after being defeated by the Nevada Wolf Pack by a final score of 91-76. Jordan Washington headlined a trio of Gaels who logged double digits in the scoring column in the loss, knocking down 11 of 14 field goal attempts and 7 of 13 from the free throw line for a game-high 29 points to go along wit his 13 rebounds, his first double-double of the season. Jon Severe connected on 5 of 12 attempts, including a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws for 13 points on the night while E.J. Crawford made 4 of 7 from the floor, including 3 of 5 from 3-point range with a free throw for 12 points. Outside of those 3, Iona made just 9 of 38 field goals for a total of 22 points the rest of the way. As a team, Iona is scoring 77 points per game on 39.1% from the field. The Gaels own the 8th-worst 3-point percentage in the country however, knocking down just 25% of their attempts on the season. Iona is also making 73.8% of their free throws.
Drake is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 neutral site games and 5-15 ATS in their last 20 games overall while the under is 6-0 in their last 6 games following a win. Iona is 11-5 ATS in their last 16 games overall and 16-34-1 ATS in their last 51 non-conference games while the under is 5-2 in their last 7 following a loss.
As far as I’m concerned, both of these teams are still winless as Drake beat a D-III team, a game you should win by all counts. With that said, Iona has had the tougher schedule of the two and I think that will serve them well here against a weaker Drake squad.
Lay the points with Iona.
