Boston College Eagles Vs. Duke Blue Devils 2/19/12
Mark’s Free College Basketball Pick Against the Spread
Duke is in their almost natural spot on top of ACC as they share first place with North Carolina and Florida State in top heavy heavy conference. Something has to give in the coming weeks as Duke has five games left in the regular season with the Seminoles and Tar Heels left to be played. This hasn't been a typical year at Cameron Indoor with the Blue Devils leaning more heavily on their ability to score the basketball. That was never more true than against North Carolina State Thursday with the Blue Devils erasing a 16 point half time hole with a 48 point explosion over the final 20 minutes. Despite 36% shooting overall, Duke hit six long balls and nailed 14 free throws in the second half while holding NC State to 32% from the field, posting five steals and forcing nine turnovers. Seth Curry paced the attack with a game high 26 points, with Austin Rivers adding 16 points while two players posting nine points each.
Boston College is down to the final four games of the regular season and at 3-9, the Eagles are spoilers as any movement up the rankings for the conference playoffs is probably not going to make a difference. BC has been very competitive the last few weeks and own a surprising victory over Florida State but the Eagles struggled at Maryland as they fell behind early and never got their feet under them. Boston College never found the shooting touch, finishing at under 33% while Maryland had no such issues with their 50% marksmanship and 8 of 16 effort from distance overwhelming the BC defense. Those numbers were decisive with neither team owning a big advantage elsewhere. Ryan Anderson tossed in 22 points and grabbed ten rebounds to lead the team in both categories, while Lonnie Jackson added 19 points and Dennis Clifford posted eleven points and five pulls.
Duke wins and names their score because Boston College is struggling over the entire season. Things that should worry Blue Devils backers is this is a huge spread on the road and their defense has seen better days. Just going with the better team...
Mark’s Pick: Duke -15.5
