Auburn Tigers Vs. South Carolina Gamecocks 1/21/12
Mitch’s Free College Basketball Pick Against the Spread
The Auburn Tigers and South Carolina Gamecocks look to move out of the bottom rung of the SEC as they meet on Saturday.
The Auburn Tigers are struggling with their SEC schedule as Tony Barbee’s team has lost four of their last five games overall. Auburn is 1-3 in the SEC, tied for ninth place in the conference, but they are 10-1 at home this season. Frankie Sullivan is averaging 12 points, Kenny Gabriel is averaging 11.2 points and 8.1 rebounds, Chris Denson is averaging 10.4 points, and Rob Chubb is averaging 10.2 points and 4.8 rebounds. As a team Auburn is averaging 65.2 points and they are shooting 42.7 percent while defensively they are allowing 65 points and their opponents are shooting 40.8 percent. Auburn appears to be over matched in the conference but they have had their way against the lesser teams.
The South Carolina Gamecocks are in last place in the SEC and Darrin Horn’s team has yet to win a conference game this season. Overall SC is two games under .500, 1-2 on the road, and they don’t have a win over a team with a RPI better than 100. Malik Cooke is averaging 12.5 points and 4.8 rebounds, Anthony Gill is averaging 8.5 points and 5.0 rebounds, and Bruce Ellington is averaging 11.1 points. As a team South Carolina is averaging 63.9 points and they are shooting 42.6 percent while defensively they are allowing 63.1 points and their opposition shoots 44.4 percent. South Carolina just doesn’t appear to have the firepower to be competitive this season.
Auburn is 12-4 against the spread following a loss, 5-2 against the spread following a cover, and 1-4 against the spread against a team with a losing record. South Carolina is 1-4 against the spread following a game which they didn’t cover, 1-6 against the spread following a loss, and 3-8 against the spread in their last 11 Saturday games. The underdog has covered in nine of the last 11 meetings of these two.
With this game virtually a pick’em it makes the pick easy as Auburn takes this one.
Mitch’s Pick: Auburn 0
