Texas Longhorns Vs. New Mexico Lobos 9/8/12: Mark's Free College Football Pick Against the Spread

Texas shoots for another win in the young season against New Mexico.

The New Mexico Lobos face the Texas Longhorns in a week two match up.

New Mexico walloped Southern 66-21 in their season opener in a rare display of scoring prowess. I know Southern is a sub division program but after watching New Mexico football for years, any win against any team no matter the division is huge. The Lobos attack rolled up 417 yards and 24 first downs and dominated the line of scrimmage with 347 rushing yards on 52 tries for just under seven yards per pop  with four players posting at least 65 yards. With such efficiency on the ground, the Lobos picked and chose when to put the ball in the air which wasn't much. BR Holbrook (6-8/57) was effective when airing it out and was mistake free with a 16 yard scoring toss. The defense and special teams played a big role with a fumble and interception brought back for six while the kick return had a 98 yard return.

Texas started off slow but finished strong in a 37-17 opening day victory versus visiting Wyoming. The Longhorns took care of business early with a 24-9 bulge heading into the break before coasting in the second half. Texas kept the clock running with a very good ball control attack that produced 436 yards with the short passing of David Ash (20-27/156) connecting for six against zero turnovers. The Longhorns made their living on the ground with Joe Bergeron and Malcolm Brown combining for 225 yards and three touchdowns which also led to over 35 minutes in time of possession. Aside from controlling the  ball with the run, the Texas defense held Wyoming at bay by holding the Cowboys to 345 yards and 1-11 on third down while limiting their ground game to under 75 yards.

The first thought that comes to mind when looking at this game is that New Mexico has zero chance here to win The Longhorns have just too  much on both sides of the ball and can name the score. My feeling is with both teams running the ball and shortening the game gives the Lobos a chance at a cover but this isn't a game I typically bet...

Mark’s Pick: New Mexico +38
