11/17/12 Tyrone’s Free College Football Pick Against the Spread
The 3-8, 2-6 California Golden Bears must lick their wounds quickly before landing in Corvallis for Week 12's tilt with the No. 16 Oregon State Beavers.
Cal was mauled by 7-2, 5-2 OSU's brethren No. 2 Oregon 59-17. The Bears played well for three-and-half quarters before unraveling. California's junior quarterback Allen Bridgford began solidly hooking up with freshman wide receiver Darius Powe for a game-tying score.
Junior placekicker Vincenzo D'Amato's 27-yard field goal snuck the Golden Bears within four as senior running back Isi Sofele's four-yard trot 4:53 into the second half cut a two-touchdown deficit to seven points. Unfortunately for Cal Bridgford was picked off soon after as the Bears went up in flames the final 21:20 35-0.
The Beavs fared better at No. 13 Stanford, but Oregon State's 27-23 loss dropped the Beavers down in the polls. OSU bounced back from a disastrous first quarter to spring ahead 23-14 during the third. Too bad for the Beavs they didn't score any more for the 8-2, 6-1 Cardinal hit pay dirt twice the remainder of the way. Oregon State was outgained 204-35 after the first period.
The Beavers however dominated the second quarter with sophomore RB Terron Ward's seven-yard rush and sophomore PK Trevor Romaine's 19-yard FG resulting in OSU points. The Beavs took the lead early during the third on senior WR Markus Wheaton's 22-yard catch from freshman QB Cody Vaz. Oregon State's Romaine added two FGs, but the Beavers offense couldn't produce any more points as the defense wielded two more scores.
OSU ends the year with three games at Reser Stadium starting with California. It'd be easy for the Beavs to look ahead with No. 2 Oregon next on the docket yet if Oregon State does a tougher game with the Golden Bears than expected could transpire. The Beavers are 4-0 in Corvallis knocking out four foes by three, 10, 13 and 14 points. OSU was just 2-4 last season at home and fell to Cal 23-6.
The Bears are 1-3 during away games this year giving 10-0, 6-0 Ohio State a fistfight before falling. California lost by 18 and 22 points in two other road clashes. The Golden Bears won at 2-8, 0-7 Washington State and were 2-4 during away games a year ago losing by a single possession twice. The Beavs won by four TDs at Reser in 2010 and should put on another home pleasing show...
