The Sprint Cup makes its way to Homestead, Florida for the final race of the 2009 season on Sunday. Jimmy Johnson needs only to finish 25th or better to secure his forth straight Sprint Cup title and vault himself into NASCAR history. Mark Martin sits 108 points behind Johnson and is really the only concern for Johnson on Sunday. Johnson will have clean air to start the race as he won the pole for the seasons final race. Johnson just wants to steer clear of any wrecks and cruse home to the title.
Last year, Carl Edwards beat Kevin Harvick to the line by over 7.5 seconds to take the win. Jamie McMurray finished third followed by Jeff Gordon and Clint Bowyer. The race included 7 cautions for 31 laps and 15 lead changes involving Eight different drivers.
While Sunday has the potential to be historic for Johnson, he has already had a good week setting up for future successes. Johnson has signed and extension with Hendrick Motorsports as well as with his main sponsor Lowe's. NASCAR has already responded to speculation saying they plan no changes to the championship format in order to slow down Johnson.
Lets take a look at a few of our picks to win on Sunday.
Carl Edwards- The defending champ has finished no lower than 14th here in the past five years. Carl has not had the season he was hoping for in Sprint Cup and will be going for the win to get momentum into next year. He is currently listed at 14-1 odds to win the race.
Jeff Gordon- Needs the win among other things to have a shot at the title. Gordon has finishes of 3rd, 4th twice, 5th twice and 9th here at Homestead. He is always competitive here and will let it all out on Sunday. Current odds on Gordon are 10-1.
