Now that the NFL preseason has officially begun, it’s time to start taking a more serious look at the upcoming fantasy football season. There are new reports and news updates coming in daily from all corners of the league, so let’s highlight a few and see what they could mean for your fantasy roster. Here’s the latest.

Bilal Powell, RB, New York Jets: We’ve been strong supporters of new Jets RB Chris Ivory this off-season, but we may have to back off that recommendation if things continue to play out as they have been recently. Ivory hasn’t been able to practice due to a hamstring injury, and in his absence, Powell has been wowing the coaching staff with his pass-catching and skillful running.
We’re not too worried about Ivory’s starting status just yet--he’s still the better back--but if Powell continues to impress he’s definitely worth a backup slot for Ivory owners.

Cowboys Offense: If the Hall of Fame Game was any indication of the Cowboys’ offensive tendencies this season, prepare for a heavy dose of DeMarco Murray. Dallas ran the ball 34 times and attempted 24 passes, but with such a small sample size (the smallest, actually)--not to mention the minimal presence of the projected starters--the news should be taken with a proverbial grain of salt.
Before you go jumping all over Murray in the draft, wait and see what the Cowboys do in their next couple of preseason games.

Robert Griffin III, QB, Washington Redskins: Little by little, we’re gaining confidence in Griffin’s surgically repaired knee. He claims he’s not even thinking about his leg anymore, and that he’s not limited in any way. Griffin still hasn’t done anything besides 7-on-7 drills yet, but we’re confident he’ll continue to progress normally. We still won’t see him in the preseason, though.
Fantasy-wise, consider Griffin one of the viable No. 1 QB names out there, somewhere around No. 8 or 9 at his position.

Tavon Austin, WR, St. Louis Rams: The more we hear out of St. Louis this off-season, the more we’re liking the rookie Austin. He’s reportedly taking on a role similar to Percy Harvin, with all sorts of creative sets and lineup possibilities at his disposal.
The more Austin displays his versatility, the more value he’ll have to the Rams and thus fantasy owners as well. Give him a good look in the mid-to-late-20s among wide receivers at your draft.
