Fantasy Football 2013: Player News and Updates for 8/18
Fantasy Football Daily: Checking in on Brady, Martin and More
August 18, 2013
Today begins a new week, and as part of the Sunday festivities, there will be countless fantasy football drafts happening around the world. With that in mind, it’s a good time to check in on some of the latest news from the NFL headlines. Let’s examine some of the noteworthy players out there. Here’s the latest.
Tom Brady, QB, New England Patriots: Just to reiterate what we’ve been saying for the past few months: we really like Brady in fantasy this season. Considering where he’s going in drafts (Round 4 or so; somewhere in the mid-30s overall), he’s got all the makings of an outright steal. Just look at his 11-for-12, 107-yards-and-a-TD performance in the Pats’ last game as proof.
Savvy owners can likely grab running backs with their first two draft picks, then stop off for a WR before nabbing Brady, but we’d recommend getting him in the third if you’re having doubts about whether he’ll still be there. He’s worth the reach.

Doug Martin, RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Let’s take a moment to check in on Martin, who provided fans and fantasy owners with quite a scare in the team’s last preseason game on Friday against the Patriots. He took a shot to the head while doing some pass blocking and there were immediate concerns that he had sustained a concussion. Martin passed all the tests, however, and should be okay going forward.
That’s good news, as a head injury would have seriously dampened his fantasy value. With that taken care of, he’s near the top of the RB hierarchy. Consider him No. 3 or 4 behind only Adrian Peterson, Arian Foster and possibly Jamaal Charles or C.J. Spiller.
More Chargers Receiver Woes: Speaking of giving fans and owners a scare, the Chargers may be down another WR for the time being. Eddie Royal left practice in an ambulance yesterday after a big hit, which further depletes the already-thin San Diego receiving corps. (Early reports say Royal is dealing with a bruised lung, which admittedly sounds pretty painful.)
Lower-end fantasy targets Malcom Floyd and Eddie Lacy are already dealing with their own ailments, so it’ll be tough to trust any Chargers WRs this season. We may have to just wait and see how things shake out.
