Fantasy Football Daily: Bell, Bradshaw and More

Tonight’s the night: in the coming hours, we’ll begin the “dress rehearsal” round of preseason games across the NFL, which should give us a window into most teams’ intents this year. It’ll be must-see television for fantasy owners everywhere. With that in mind, let’s take our daily look at the noteworthy fantasy names out there and see what everyone’s up to. Here’s the latest.

Le’Veon Bell, RB, Pittsburgh Steelers: The talk of the fantasy world this week has been popular sleeper pick Bell--and for all the wrong reasons. He’s coming off a foot injury in the Steelers’ last preseason game, and things aren’t looking too good. The latest reports say he’s suffering from a foot strain--which is a more rosy scenario than, say, a Lisfranc injury--and will miss the team’s Week 3 preseason game against the Chiefs on Saturday.
We’d imagine Bell will sit out the rest of the preseason at least, with the potential to miss some regular season time as well. (There’s a report out there that says he’ll be out for up to six weeks.) We’ll know more when the team puts some sort of a timeline on his recovery--look for a statement from coach Tomlin today--but for now go ahead and stash him on your fantasy bench.

Rob Housler, TE, Arizona Cardinals: Is there reason to worry about Housler’s production this season? Possibly, if you’re one of those fantasy owners who believe that preseason stats can be a harbinger of the year to come. He’s only been targeted once through the Cardinals’ pair of games thus far, and doesn’t have a catch yet.
We wouldn’t worry too much about Housler’s lack of participation in the team’s offensive plans. The coaching staff is well aware that he can catch, and they’ve got all sorts of packages which feature him. We’d imagine they’ll get him a little more involved statistically in the team’s third preseason game. Housler is still a nice sleeper pick in fantasy, especially at such a thin position as tight end.

Lamar Miller, RB, Miami Dolphins: As the heir apparent to Reggie Bush, Miller has been getting plenty of attention in fantasy drafts thus far. He’s currently going right around No. 40 overall, which is a lot to risk for someone who still hasn’t officially landed the starting RB gig yet.
Miller is still fighting off Daniel Thomas for the No. 1 position, as neither has separated himself thus far in the preseason. That said, Miller is expected to win the starter gig and cede carries to Thomas on third and passing downs. Does that make Miller a top 40 pick in fantasy? We say no; he likely won’t get enough touches to justify such an investment.

Ahmad Bradshaw, RB, Indianapolis Colts: It’s been a while since we’ve checked in on Bradshaw, so let’s see what he’s up to. His recovery from foot surgery continues to chug along at a snail’s pace, but he’s making progress. Yesterday was the first time Bradshaw practiced in full pads, so there’s a little optimism brewing there. Still, he’s not expected to play in the team’s Week 3 preseason game.
The Colts need him, as they’ve gone exactly nowhere running the ball with Vick Ballard thus far. Whether or not we’ll see Bradshaw at all in the preseason remains to be seen, however we wouldn’t be surprised if he’s good to go by the time the regular season hits. With that in mind, he’ll probably go around 70 or so overall in your draft.
