Fantasy Baseball Daily: Checking in on Cano, Stanton and more

The mid-week series are getting finished up across the MLB today, which will provide a bridge into the big weekend series. There are plenty of fantasy considerations to check into as the players switch opponents, so with that in mind let’s take a closer look at some of the noteworthy names out there and see what everyone’s up to. Here’s the latest.

Robinson Cano, 2B, New York Yankees: Today and tomorrow will be big days in determining Cano’s immediate future in the field. The plan is for him to rest his ailing hand today (he was hit by a pitch on Tuesday against the Blue Jays; X-rays were negative), then try to do some swinging in the cage and take batting practice tomorrow. If all goes well, Cano should be out there for the series opener against Baltimore. In the meantime, owners will have to keep an eye on any news out of Yankees HQ regarding his condition.

Fantasy Baseball News: Player News and Updates for 8/29/13

Dexter Fowler, OF, Colorado Rockies: We’ve got some encouraging news on Fowler this morning, and it should put to rest his fantasy owners’ concerns--at least a little bit, anyway. He sustained a lateral knee bruise during Monday’s game, and has been out of the lineup since. However, an MRI yesterday revealed no structural damage, so it shouldn’t be too much longer before he’s back to his old self. Expect Fowler to sit a few more days to make sure he’s good to go before hitting the field again.

Matt Kemp, OF, Los Angeles Dodgers: Kemp owners haven’t had much to smile about thus far in 2013, but this news should serve to be at least a little helpful. The oft-injured outfielder is officially scheduled for a rehab assignment to get back to speed after his ankle injury; he’ll join High-A today. After a few warm-up games, Kemp should be back in action with the Dodgers. The only concern here is L.A.’s plethora of outfielder talent: between Kemp, Puig, Crawford and Ethier, someone will get the shaft on playing time.

Stephen Strasburg, SP, Washington Nationals: Strasburg’s outing against the inept Marlins offense ended prematurely yesterday due to a rain delay. The game lasted two innings before the halt; meanwhile Strasburg’s back began to tighten up, so the team elected to keep him out. We may see a bit of a rotation adjustment for the weekend thanks to the short outing: Strasburg is scheduled to throw Monday against the Phillies, but may be able to go Sunday against the Mets. Stay tuned; we’ll keep you posted.

Giancarlo Stanton, OF, Miami Marlins: Stanton hasn’t given his fantasy owners much this year, but he’s been producing (kind of) recently. He’s hit in nine of his last 10 games, including a solo homer in a 1-for-4 overall effort yesterday. That gives him 17 on the year to go along with 41 RBI and 46 runs; very meager totals and nowhere near the big-time output that was expected of him this season. Still, Stanton’s owners will take what they can get. The Marlins will stay on the road over the next week, booking games in Atlanta and Chicago against the Cubs.
