Fantasy Football Daily: 49ers-Rams Notes, Cutler, Garcon and More
September 27, 2013
The fourth week of the fantasy football season has already begun, which will bring plenty of lineup considerations over the next few days. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at some of the ongoing storylines and noteworthy players around the NFL and see what we should be expecting from our rosters this week. Here’s the latest.
49ers-Rams Fantasy Notes: There were several fantasy considerations in the 49ers’ big 35-11 victory over the Rams last night, both positive and negative. Frank Gore was the big performer in this one, with 153 yards and a score on 20 carries. Anquan Boldin was the main beneficiary of QB Colin Kaepernick’s okay-but-not-great passing performance, with the two hooking up for 90 yards and a score.
On the other side, pretty much everyone was a major disappointment. Specifically, Daryl Richardson posted just 20 total yards in his return from a foot injury, but things should be looking up for him with a cake matchup against the Jags in Week 5.

Julius Thomas, TE, Denver Broncos: Thomas owners should be salivating at the upcoming matchup the young tight end has this weekend. He and the rest of the Broncos offense will be facing off against the Eagles, who most certainly haven’t been known for their defense this season. Given the fast-paced nature of the Philadelphia offense, we’re likely looking at a shootout (or just a blowout) in this one. Giving Peyton Manning more time on the field by rushing through your offensive motions isn’t the way to beat Denver.
That leaves Thomas in a very good place. He’s scored four touchdowns in three games so far, and seems poised for more action. We’re not worried about him in the least.
Jay Cutler, QB, Chicago Bears: If you’re plugging in Cutler as your replacement QB in lieu of Aaron Rodgers or Cam Newton this week, history is on your side. During nine games against the Lions in his career, Cutler is 7-2 with 1,822 yards, 12 touchdowns and only one interception.
So far, he’s made some pretty wise decisions with the football. He does have three interceptions, but hasn’t completed less than 63.6 percent of his passes in any game yet this year. Cutler is coming off a very tame game against Pittsburgh (153 yards, one touchdown), but we expect a livelier performance on Sunday. He makes a pretty decent fill-in this week in fantasy.
Pierre Garcon, WR, Washington Redskins: Lots of people are picking Garcon for a breakout performance this week, and we’d be inclined to agree. So far, he’s had one great week (Week 2: 143 yards and a TD) and two okay weeks (Week 1: 64 yards; Week 3: 83 total yards). The encouraging thing is that he has at least seven catches in each game, so he’s definitely a centerpiece of the passing strategy. (That and the Redskins’ defense is so horrible that their offense has to throw to play catch-up every week, but we digress.)
Garcon and the gang will see the Oakland Raiders on Sunday, which is a pretty decent matchup. We fully expect him to flirt with double-digit fantasy points this weekend, so lock him into your lineup and watch the numbers roll in.
