Injury Update: Key Defensive Players
Most fantasy owners tend to overlook the value of defenses on their fantasy football rosters. Defenses score points just like other players, and it is always better to play defenses that are at full strength just like its better to play running backs that are 100% healthy. Several key fantasy defenses have been dealing with injuries to their leaders. Here is a quick update on some key defensive injuries for this week.
Vince Wilfork - The biggest man who is literally the center of the Patriots defense has been lost for the season. Wilfork was the centerpiece of New England's defense for several years, and now they will have to carry on without him. Wilfork will be as tough to replace on the defensive side of the ball as Brady would be to replace on the offensive side. If you're a fantasy owner who has been using the Patriots as your main defense this year, you'll need to keep on eye on their game this week and see if they are able to overcome the loss of Wilfork.

Brian Cushing - Cushing is arguably the most important player on the Texans defense and that is a bold statement considering J.J. Watt is Cushings' teammate. Last week, the Seahawks made their comeback after Cushing left the game due to a concussion, and Watt was still on the field. Cushing is a very smart linebacker and his skills are escpecially important when the Texan's are going up against mobile quarterbacks like Kaepernick this weekend. As of now, Cushing has been cleared to play, but make sure he is active before you decide to start the Texans defense.
Clay Matthews - Matthews suffered a hamstring injury during the Packers game against the Bengals, but he appears to be on track to play this week. Matthews is the most important defensive player in Green Bay, and its not a coincidence that the Bengals made a comeback once Matthews had to the leave their game. If you are using the Green Bay defense this week, it appears they will have their best player on the field.
Patrick Willis - Willis has been dealing with a groin injury for the past few weeks, and he may miss the 49ers game this weekend against Houston. Last week against the Rams, the 49ers showed they can be a dominating defense without Willis on the field and that is good news for fantasy owners. The bad news is that the Texans offense is better and more explosive than the Rams offense. Keep an eye on Willis's status if you are planning to use the 49ers defense this week. The 49ers have shown they can be a very strong defense, but they are much better with WIllis on the field.
Other Key Injuries of Note:
Ahmad Bradshaw - Bradshaw suffered a neck injury when the colts played the 49ers two weeks ago, and now he may undergo season ending surgery. Bradshaw is going to take a few seeks to make a decision, so this is a situation to monitor.
Stevan Ridley - Ridley is out this week with a knee injury and now LeGarrette Blount will take over the lead role in New England for at least this week. If Blount is on your waiver wire, pick him up now!
Ra'Del Scott - Scott was released by the Giants this week, and this move suggest that David Wilson will once again be given the chance to be the lead back for the Giants. Wilson has a great matchup this week against the Eagles and he is worth a start.
