Fantasy Football Daily: Checking in on Wilson, Clay and more
October 7, 2013
We’re almost finished with Week 5 in the NFL, and there are still plenty of fantasy considerations to come as we look ahead to the weekend. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at some of the noteworthy fantasy names out there who are making headlines this morning and try to get a feel for what’s in store for the immediate future. Here’s the latest.
Texans-49ers Fantasy Notes: If you had the 49ers defense active for last night’s game against the Texans (and really, why wouldn’t you?) you’re pretty happy this morning. They managed four turnovers and a score in that one, helping San Francisco to rout the Texans 34-3.
The run game came up big here, as Frank Gore posted 81 yards and a score. Colin Kaepernick, meanwhile, only completed six passes for 113 and a Vernon Davis TD, and didn’t do much with his feet, either (14 yards). Anquan Boldin owners are probably fuming today, as he remains invisible in the nonexistent San Francisco passing game, tallying just two grabs for 21 yards.

Charles Clay, TE, Miami Dolphins: Lots of fantasy owners have picked up on Clay recently, and they were rewarded for it yesterday. He posted another solid outing, with 52 yards and a score on three grabs in a loss to the Ravens. That makes two straight weeks with a touchdown for Clay, and he’s emerged as a reliable fantasy TE for those in need.
The ‘Phins are on a bye next week, but will emerge after their rest with a pretty promising game against the Bills. Keep Clay stashed in the meantime.
Jamaal Charles, RB, Kansas City Chiefs: In these first few weeks of the season, Charles has definitely earned his status as one of the top fantasy running backs in the game. He’s been extremely reliable from game to game, with his most recent effort yesterday going for 108 rush yards on 22 carries (both season-highs) and added a touchdown.
Charles still racked up 37 yards through the air, but the passing game wasn’t going quite as smoothly as it normally does. Still, owners won’t be complaining this morning. He’ll see Oakland in Week 6.
David Wilson, RB, New York Giants: What an up-and-down fantasy day it was for Wilson. His starts went up this week due to byes (and, we’re guessing, desperation in some cases), and he was finally able to deliver some tangible stats to go along with all the high hopes. He finished with 16 yards and a touchdown, but ended up coming out of the game due to a neck injury during the first quarter.
Initial reports say that Wilson’s injury isn’t serious, and that the Giants held him out as a precautionary measure. He apparently passed all tests administered to him.
That’s good news, but Wilson will have a pretty tough test against the Bears--not to mention a short turnaround--Thursday evening.
Trent Richardson, RB, Indianapolis Colts: We’ll check in on ol’ T-Rich quickly, as his brief Colts tenure has been pretty odd thus far. He didn’t make it into the end zone for the first time in the last three games and was held to just 56 rush yards (though that was a team-high) and had no catches against Seattle.
Donald Brown vultured a TD from Richardson, so his line could have been much better. Still, his rush stats are trending in the right direction, so he should hit his stride after a couple more games--hopefully.
