Fantasy Football Daily: Checking in on Lacy, Thomas and more
November 17, 2013
Today will be a big day for fantasy leagues everywhere, as we’ll be seeing the bulk of the Week 11 games kicking off within a few hours. There are still some tough lineup decisions to be made and storylines to follow, so with that in mind let’s take a closer look at some of the notable names and situations out there. Here’s the latest.
A.J. Green, WR, Cincinnati Bengals: We’ve touched on the Bengals-Browns matchup coming today, and one of the key components in either side getting a win will be the battle between Green and Cleveland CB Joe Haden. Green owners are riding high right now, coming off a huge Week 10 performance which provided 151 yards and a touchdown (though much of that came off a last-second Hail Mary play). He’s surpassed 100 yards receiving in five straight games and is a no-duh fantasy start in each week.
That said, Green might have some difficulties against Haden. The beastly corner held him in check during the last Bengals-Browns matchup, with just 51 yards on seven receptions. This game is in Cincinnati, so the familiar surroundings might help, but we still expect Green to take a step backward this week.

John Carlson, TE, Minnesota Vikings: We like Carlson as a fantasy sleeper this week, and there are a few reasons why. He’s coming off a career game in Week 10 against the Redskins, with seven catches for 98 yards and a score. There’s some indication that he’s working himself into a heavy role with the offense, as he’s received at least six targets in each of the past two games.
That said, the matchup here is pretty bad. Carlson is facing a stingy Seahawks defense in Seattle, and they’ve allowed just three touchdowns to opposing tight ends all season. Carlson may be able to find some holes here and there, but there’s a bit of risk involved in starting him. He’s a low-end play if you’re desperate for a body at the TE position.
Eddie Lacy, RB, Green Bay Packers: Lacy will have a heavy role in getting a win for his team--and his fantasy owners. He’s coming off somewhat of a “meh” performance, posting 73 yards on 24 carries against Philadelphia. That was his lowest total since Week 2.
Today Lacy will get a chance to bounce back against the Giants. That seems like a pretty good matchup at first glance, but the New York defense is much better than they get credit for. They’re ranked 11th in the league in both rushing and passing yards allowed average, so it won’t be a cakewalk for the Green Bay running game. That said, we expect Lacy to get plenty of work considering it’s his QB’s first road start, so he should be just fine.
Julius Thomas, TE, Kansas City Chiefs: Everyone will be watching this one tonight. It’s a battle of the two best teams in the NFL on “Sunday Night Football,” and as a result there will be fantasy implications all over the place. One key player in particular is Thomas, who is coming off a great game against the Chargers. He posted 96 yards and a score on three receptions, and he’ll be looking to keep it going tonight.
Standing in his way is the Kansas City defense, who won’t let him get those yards so easily. They’ve been excellent against opposing tight ends, and haven’t allowed a touchdown to the position yet. That said, they haven’t faced a player quite like Thomas yet this season, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens.
