Fantasy Football Daily: Checking in on Sanders, Austin and more
November 19, 2013
Week 11 is now at its end, so a lot of us are getting down to the last couple of regular season games in the fantasy football year. If your team is teetering on the brink of playoff glory and another forgotten season, you’ll want to stay informed so you can make the best lineup decisions possible. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at some of the noteworthy fantasy names out there this morning. Here’s the latest.
Patriots-Panthers Notes: There were a few big outings in the Patriots-Panthers matchup on “Monday Night Football,” but fantasy-wise, most players were bad or at least “meh.” Cam Newton was the standout, posting three touchdowns and a game-high 67 rush yards. His seven carries were one more than DeAngelo Williams or Mike Tolbert got.
On the other side, Rob Gronkowski had a decent game (five grabs, 59 yards and a score), while Tom Brady was underwhelming again. The veteran QB posted 296 pass yards, one TD and one pick. He’s only thrown multiple TDs once since Week 4.
Also of note was Shane Vereen, who was activated before the game and ended up leading the team in receiving (eight receptions, 65 yards).

Emmanuel Sanders, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers: Sanders owners got a scare this past week when he was removed from the Lions game due to a foot injury, but it looks like we’ve escaped a major injury here. According to a report that emerged yesterday, his injury isn’t serious and he’s expected to be okay. Now, the major hurdle for Sanders owners will be deciding whether or not they can trust him or not as his up-and-down season continues. Over the past two weeks, he’s caught just five passes for 15 yards.
His fortunes may be changing this week, as the Steelers will be going up against their division rival browns. Beastly CB Joe Haden figures to get matched up with Antonio Brown, which would open up Sanders as a primary option in the passing game.
Lions Injuries: We’ve got a couple of tidbits for you from the Lions this morning. First off, we’ll start with WR Nate Burleson. There is a “possibility” that he may be able to make his way back into the lineup this week against the Buccaneers, which would immediately make him a viable fantasy option. Burleson has missed the last seven games with a forearm injury, but in the three games before that he posted 19 grabs for 239 yards. He’s another legitimate option behind Megatron.
Also, we got a bit of an update on RB Joique Bell yesterday. His ankle injury, suffered in the loss against the Steelers, has been categorized as “day-to-day,” which sounds promising for his Week 12 status. Bell posted 98 yards and a score on Sunday.
Miles Austin, WR, Dallas Cowboys: If you’ve taken a look at the waiver wire over the past couple of days, you probably noticed that Austin’s name is trending upward. That’s due to the renewed sense of optimism the team has in his availability for the Giants game. He’s expected to play, and if he’s healthy, he makes a viable pickup at WR.
Assuming you do nab Austin off the wire, we’d suggest sitting on him for at least a week first. His season has been wrecked by injury ever since his 10-catch, 72-yard outing in Week 1, and he posted exactly zero catches in his last two game appearances. We’ll have to see what he looks like before deciding what to think of him in fantasy from here on out.
