Daily Fantasy NHL 3/20/14: Matchup Plays and Value Picks
Fantasy Hockey Daily Leagues: Sleeper Picks and Advice for Tonight's Matchups
March 20, 2014
With a pretty hefty NHL schedule on tap for this evening, it’s a good time to go over your fantasy hockey roster before the games get started. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at some of the trending players out there and see what they have to offer in tonight’s matchups. If you’re looking for a sleeper or a matchup play, here’s where to start.
James Neal, LW/RW, Pittsburgh Penguins: Neal is a hot trend on the waiver wire over the past day or so, and it’s not necessarily because of his play (though that has been good this season). This is more of a reaction to his favorable health news: He was able to come back to the ice after a two-game concussion absence, which is a very quick turnaround for a head injury.
Neal logged a couple of shots on goal in just over 17 minutes against Dallas, so things are looking pretty good as far as his health moving forward. He’s in Detroit tonight and should be just fine.

Lee Stempniak, LW/RW, Pittsburgh Penguins: Let’s stick in Pittsburgh for a moment and check out Stempniak, who is also a hot waiver wire trend right now. He came up with a three-point night against Dallas (one goal and two assists) with a plus-2 rating in the victory. That gives him five helpers in his last five games.
Stempniak has been a pretty good facilitator this season. He’s got 20 assists, but that minus-19 rating might bog your roster down. Still, he’s showing some promise recently and will provide enough to be worth a look.
Gustav Nyquist, C/RW, Detroit Red Wings: We’ll head to the other bench in tonight’s Red Wings-Penguins matchup to visit with Nyquist, who has been making waves of his own accord recently. He’s coming off a hot game against Toronto, during which he delivered a pair of goals and a plus-1 rating.
That’s three goals in the last two games for Nyquist, who now boasts 19 goals, 16 assists and a plus-8 rating on the season (43 games). He’s been the Big Man on Campus for the injured Red Wings, so he’s a must-have player if he’s still out there in your league.
Michael Cammalleri, C/LW, Calgary Flames: Cammalleri and the Flames don’t play until tomorrow, but we’ll go ahead and give him a look since he’s currently trending hot among fantasy circles. He’s got a five-game points streak going right now, during which he’s produced five goals and two assists.
That’s part of a 20-goal, 11-assist season for Cammalleri, and though he’s minus-23 on the year (but plus-2 in his last three), he’s obviously worth a look since he’s so hot right now. He’ll play tomorrow against Nashville.
Kimmo Timonen, D, Philadelphia Flyers: One of the hotter D names out there right now is Timonen, who has been cruising since returning from the Olympics. In his last five games, he’s got two goals, one assist and a plus-5 rating.
That’s part of a four-score, 23-helper season for Timonen, who is also rocking a plus-7 rating on the year. He plays at home tonight against the Stars, and makes a nice choice for those in need of a defenseman.
