Daily Fantasy MLB 4/17/14: Matchup Plays and Value Picks
Fantasy Baseball Daily Leagues: Sleeper Picks and Advice for Upcoming Matchups
April 17, 2014
The early-week series are getting finished up around the MLB today, and we’re transitioning into the weekend sets. That means there’s plenty of opportunity out there for fantasy baseball owners, so with that in mind let’s take our daily look at some of the up-and-coming players you should be aware of if you’re looking for a matchup play or a sleeper candidate.
George Springer, OF, Houston Astros: Who’s George Springer? He’s the hottest ticket in fantasy baseball right now, that’s who. He earned a promotion from Triple-A yesterday, thanks to a scorching start that included a .353 BA, three homers, nine RBI and four steals in just 13 games. In his debut, he put up a 1-for-5 line with a run. He was also caught stealing.
Springer will be the man in right field for Houston, and he carries all sorts of buzz with him as he takes his first swings of the 2014 season. He’s a must-have player as the Astros finish up against KC today.

Neil Walker, 2B, Pittsburgh Pirates: Over the past few games, Walker has been as hot as anyone on the diamond. Heading into yesterday’s finale against Cincinnati, he had posted five hits in seven at-bats, with four runs, three homers and four RBI in that two-game span. He followed that up with an 0-for-3 line yesterday, though.
Walker’s power surge has taken everybody by surprise, and at this rate we wouldn’t be shocked to see him eclipse 20 dingers on the season. He and the Pirates head back home today to see the Brewers.
Devin Mesoraco, C, Cincinnati Reds: Speaking of being hot, Mesoraco is the dictionary definition of a streaking player right now. Heading into yesterday’s finale against the Pirates, he’d posted six hits in his previous three games, with two homers, two runs and seven RBI in that timeframe. He sat out the Reds’ most recent game, however.
Mesoraco has been a real boost for fantasy owners in need of a reliable backstop this season. Starting tomorrow, he’ll head to Chicago and take on the Cubs at Wrigley. Go get him now if he’s still out there.
Scott Feldman, SP, Houston Astros: Feldman’s father passed away last week, and he landed on the bereavement list because of it. He wasn’t expected to miss any starts, however, and ought to be good to go for today at home against the Royals.
Feldman is 2-0 this season with just one earned run through three games so far. He’s not a high-strikeout guy--and will eventually correct himself statistically--but he should post some nice numbers today. Check him out.
Juan Uribe, 3B, Los Angeles Dodgers: So far, Uribe has lived up to his 2013 heights, and he’s gaining a lot of fantasy attention because of his solid play. Heading into last night’s game in San Francisco, he’d posted seven hits in his last three games, with four runs, two homers and four RBI collected in that span. He kept it going yesterday with a 1-for-3 line.
All of that said, we’re not really expecting Uribe to keep it up; This is simply a scorching start. He’ll come back down to earth, but in the meantime you can kick the tires as the Dodgers finish up against the Giants today.
