Fantasy Baseball Update 6/12/14: Key Matchups This Weekend
Fantasy Baseball 2014: Weekend Waiver Wire Pickups
June 12, 2014
Thursday is a transitional day in the MLB, and thus we fantasy owners should be looking forward to the big weekend series. With that in mind let’s take a look ahead and check out some of the lesser-known names out there who could help your fantasy team in a big way over the next few days--and beyond.
Josh Tomlin, SP/RP, Cleveland Indians: Let’s get the proverbial ball rolling this morning with a closer look at Tomlin, who is coming off a pretty good win in Texas during his last appearance. He went eight innings in that one, allowing three earned on seven hits.
That one gave Tomlin four wins this year to go along with his 3.12 ERA and 0.94 WHIP. The road matchup against the Red Sox today in their series opener isn’t exactly the most favorable condition out there, but for those mixed-leaguers at this level, he should do fine.

Chase Anderson, SP/RP, Arizona Diamondbacks: Over the past couple of days, Anderson has been a pretty popular waiver wire pickup. He’s coming off a two-earned, five-hit effort in seven innings against the Braves, bagging the win for number five on the year.
Anderson boasts a 3.14 ERA with a 1.15 WHIP. He gets a fairly tough draw in Los Angeles against the Dodgers tomorrow, but with the way he’s been throwing lately it’s hard to bet against him.
Gregory Polanco, OF, Pittsburgh Pirates: We admit it: We’re buying into all the hype surrounding Polanco in his Major League exploits, and enjoying ourselves as we attempt to guess at what he could be when he’s at his ceiling. His debut Tuesday went well, with a hit and a run against the Cubs. He had another hit and an RBI yesterday.
Polanco and company will get Miami this weekend, which is a pretty good-looking setup for the talented youngster. We predict big things here, so go get him if you can.
Christian Yelich, OF, Miami Marlins: Let’s stick with that Pirates-Marlins matchup for a moment and check out Yelich, who is no stranger to this space himself. He carried a four-game hit streak into the Texas finale, posting nine hits, three runs, five RBI and two steals in that frame. He was 1-for-3 yesterday.
Yelich is just recently removed from an ugly stretch that had his BA dipping to new lows, so it’s good to see him step it up. He should be able to continue the run at home this weekend.
Jon Singleton, 1B, Houston Astros: The Astros are one of the hotter teams in baseball--and thus fantasy--this season, and their key contributors are hot adds recently. Singleton entered the Arizona series with a four-game hit streak in tow, with four runs, a homer and four RBI in that span. He posted an 0-fer yesterday, but still had an RBI.
It doesn’t look like Singleton will be logging a whole bunch of RBI, but he should be contributing well enough in other areas to enable owners to overlook that fact. He’ll finish up with Arizona today before welcoming Tampa tomorrow.
