Daily Fantasy MLB 7/20/14: Matchup Plays and Value Picks
Fantasy Baseball Daily Leagues: Sleeper Picks and Advice for Upcoming Matchups
July 20, 2014
Our first set of weekend series after the MLB’s All-Star break will be getting finished up today, so we fantasy owners should be back into the swing of things. With that said, let’s take our daily look at some of the popular adds and trending players out there to see if anyone’s right for your lineup.
Joaquin Benoit, RP, San Diego Padres: We’d be remiss if we didn’t talk about Benoit today. He’s been the hottest ticket in the fantasy community over the weekend now that he’s been named the Padres’ new closer.
Benoit didn’t start his post-All-Star run very well. He posted a loss on Friday, giving up a run on two walks and a hit. That said, he’s definitely worth picking up just about everywhere, and he has some nice matchups ahead as well.

Zach Putnam, RP, Chicago White Sox: While we’re on the subject of relief pitching, we might as well visit Putnam, too. He bagged a save on Friday, posting a clean ninth against Houston and bagging a pair of strikeouts. He logged another one yesterday, only needing five pitches to get the final out.
Putnam looks to be the best option out of the White Sox bullpen right now, so there’s a good indication he’ll get more looks going forward. If you’re scraping the proverbial bottom of the barrel in search of saves, he’s probably your guy.
Zack Wheeler, SP, New York Mets: Let’s move on from a “Zach” to a “Zack” as we take a look at Wheeler. He’s been a trendy pickup this weekend and has the stats to back it up. Over his last two starts, he’s 2-0, allowing just two earned on 11 combined hits. He’s struck out 10 in that time.
Wheeler is sporting a 3.90 ERA and 1.36 WHIP on the season and has only allowed more than one earned run once in his last five starts. He’ll get a favorable matchup today against the Padres.
Travis d’Arnaud, C, New York Mets: We’ll stick in the Big Apple for a moment and check out d’Arnaud, as he’s been one of the big-ticket catchers being added in fantasy this weekend. He entered the post-All-Star-break period with a bang, posting a 3-for-5 outing with a run and two RBI against the Padres. He bagged another hit yesterday.
Ever since d’Arnaud came back from the minor leagues, he’s been on fire. That batting average is beginning to creep back up into respectable territory as well, so keep him on your radar.
Kolten Wong, 2B, St. Louis Cardinals: It’s been a while since we’ve checked out Wong, so let’s see what he’s been up to. On Friday, he came back from the break strong, logging two hits and two runs against the Dodgers. It was just his first multi-hit game since July 8, but hey, we’re not complaining. He had two more hits and a run yesterday.
Wong has been on his game ever since he returned to the majors, and fantasy owners have reaped the benefits. We like him to keep it going, as we really can’t argue with a 2B guy who’s hitting well.
