Fantasy Baseball Update 7/24/14: Key Matchups This Weekend
Fantasy Baseball 2014: Weekend Waiver Wire Pickups
July 24, 2014
It’s Thursday, and that means it’s time for fantasy baseball owners to start looking ahead to the weekend series. We’ve checked out a few of the upcoming matchups and come up with a few names you might want to check out as potential adds to your fantasy roster. Here’s a closer look at the stats.
Josh Rutledge, 2B/3B/SS, Colorado Rockies: Rutledge has been on a roll this week, and he’s gaining plenty of fantasy attention because of it. Heading into play yesterday, he had a four-game hit streak to his credit, with six hits, two runs, a homer and two RBI in that span. He had two more hits and a run yesterday to keep it going.
As long as Rutledge is hitting, he’s safe to pick up in most leagues--especially considering his positional eligibility. That said, the Rockies have been colossally bad recently, so we may not see too many RBI against the Pirates this weekend.

Jacob deGrom, SP/RP, New York Mets: DeGrom has been all the rage recently in the fantasy world, and that attention is paying dividends for owners. In his last pair of starts, he’s gone a combined 14 innings, allowing just two earned on 10 hits with 15 runs.
This weekend, deGrom will take on the Brewers, which is a decent matchup for a streaking pitcher. He’s working a 3.01 ERA and 1.29 WHIP heading into that one, and should improve on those numbers.
Odrisamer Despaigne, SP, San Diego Padres: Despaigne has made some waves on the waiver wire recently, thanks to some nice numbers in his last few outings. Over his last five appearances, he’s only allowed more than one earned run once, and more than five hits just once as well. He’s 2-1 in that span.
Despaigne isn’t perfect, but while he’s throwing well he’s definitely a consideration. He’ll carry a 1.31 ERA and 0.90 WHIP into a road matchup in Atlanta tomorrow, and looks like a great fit for many rosters.
Neil Walker, 2B, Pittsburgh Pirates: Let’s head back to this weekend’s Pirates-Rockies matchup for a moment and check out Walker, who has been tearing it up recently. Heading into the Dodgers finale, he had a six-game hit streak going, complete with nine runs, three homers and seven RBI. He posted an 0-fer yesterday, but nabbed a run.
Even with all the production he’s been pouring in this season, Walker is still being overlooked in a few fantasy leagues. Make sure he’s not spoken for in your league, and snatch him up.
Lucas Duda, 1B/OF, New York Mets: Duda has made it into this space once or twice before, so let’s check in on him and see how he’s doing lately. Heading into the Seattle finale, he had a six-game hit streak going, with eight hits, four runs, a homer, two RBI and a steal in that span. He came up empty at the plate but posted a run yesterday.
It’s been a nice campaign so far for Duda, who has surprised a lot of people who wrote him off before the season. He’ll be in Milwaukee starting today for a four-game weekend set.
