Fantasy Baseball Update 7/28/14: Key Matchups Early This Week
Fantasy Baseball 2014: Early-Week Waiver Wire Pickups
July 28, 2014
It’s time to get back to the workweek, and for fantasy owners that means the early-week series are upon us in the MLB. That said, let’s take a look at some of the up-and-coming players who look like they’re primed for solid numbers in this week’s matchups. If you’re looking for a sleeper or a plug-and-play, here’s where to start.
Marcus Stroman, SP/RP, Toronto Blue Jays: Let’s start things out on the mound like usual and check out Stroman, who has earned quite a few adds since his last start. He went seven innings against Boston in that one, posting no earned on one hit with seven strikeouts in the win.
On the season, Stroman owns a 3.21 ERA and 1.10 WHIP with a half-dozen wins to his credit. The good news? He gets the Red Sox again tomorrow at Fenway. We see at least a quality start in his future.

David Phelps, SP/RP, New York Yankees: Phelps is flying under the radar in fantasy, and that’s good news if you need an SP at his level. He’s coming off a five-inning (rain-shortened) win against Texas, with one earned on five hits with three strikeouts.
Phelps owns a 3.77 ERA and 1.34 WHIP on the season, and hasn’t lost a game since June 7. He’s definitely trending in the right way, so give him a look before tonight on the road against the Rangers once again.
Carlos Beltran, OF, New York Yankees: Let’s stick with the Yankees for a moment and check out Beltran, who is more than worth a look in most leagues. Heading into the Toronto finale, he had hits in four of five, with four runs, two homers and three RBI to his credit in that span. He had a hit and an RBI yesterday.
Beltran’s BA is certainly a disappointment, but if you look past that (which is admittedly difficult) he’s giving up some nice power numbers right now. If he can keep that trend alive in Texas this week, he’s worth a shot.
Martin Prado, 2B/3B/OF, Arizona Diamondbacks: Prado has been tearing it up at the plate lately, which has earned a lot of attention from fantasy owners. Heading into the Philadelphia finale, he had a five-game hit streak, during which he provided three runs, a homer and six RBI. He posted a hit yesterday.
We like the direction that Prado is headed, and he’s certainly capable of becoming a viable utility option for most fantasy leagues. He’s in Cincinnati this week, so let’s see what he can do against the Reds.
Chad Johnson, 1B/3B, Atlanta Braves: It’s been a while since we’ve checked out Johnson, so let’s see what he’s been up to. He entered play yesterday with hits in three of his last five, with two runs, a homer and four RBI on him in that frame. He had a hit, a run and two RBI yesterday.
Johnson didn’t start out the year so great, but this month things have gotten better for him. If he can keep those RBI flowing in, he’ll make a serviceable option in L.A. against the Dodgers (and today’s series finale against the Padres).
