Fantasy Baseball 2014: Early-Week Waiver Wire Pickups
August 5, 2014
It’s Tuesday, and around these parts that means it’s waiver wire time. Let’s kick off the first of our biweekly installments by checking out some of the trending names out there who could make a big difference to your fantasy baseball team in the near (and far) future. Here’s a closer look at the numbers.
Danny Santana, 2B/SS/OF, Minnesota Twins: We’re going to start things off a little differently this morning by heading right to the position players. Santana burst onto the scene as a top waiver pickup yesterday, following a five-hit Sunday that saw him collect two runs, four RBI and a pair of steals.
With that .327 BA this year, there’s really no arguing Santana’s worth. You can’t really rely on him for swipes, but they’ll come here and there. He’s getting close to must-have territory right now.

Josh Reddick, OF, Oakland Athletics: Now let’s head to the outfield and check out Reddick, who had a nice series against KC. In those three games, he posted six hits, three runs, two homers and three RBI. He followed that up with a hit and a run yesterday.
Reddick’s recent hot streak has brought his BA into respectable territory, but he’s still got some work to do. If you think this is the beginning of a hot streak, you’ll want to hop on the bandwagon right away.
Chris Coghlan, 3B/OF, Chicago Cubs: Now let’s head over to the North Side and check out Coghlan, who has graced this space a couple of times before. He’s currently on a six-game hit streak, with the last five of those featuring two hits apiece. He’s posted five runs, a homer, a swipe and two RBI in that frame.
Coghlan had a stellar July and this month is shaping up to be pretty good as well. He’s scorching right now, so if you’re in the market for someone at the hot corner, he’s definitely your guy.
Dallas Keuchel, SP/RP, Houston Astros: The Astros recently decided that they’re going to hang on to Keuchel rather than dangle him in the trade market, and it’s easy to see why. He’s coming off a complete game against Oakland, allowing just four hits and an earned run in the victory.
Keuchel has 10 wins on the season to go along with a nice 2.97 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. Coming up today is a favorable matchup in Philly, so pick him up while you can.
Jesse Hahn, SP, San Diego Padres: Now let’s move on over to San Diego and check out Hahn, who has been tearing it up out there. He’s on a three-game win streak right now, posting just one earned run in each of those games.
Hahn has seven victories since June 14, and sports a 2.01 ERA with a 1.02 WHIP. There’s not much to get discouraged about here, especially considering he’s got a nice matchup on tap today in Minnesota.
