Fantasy Baseball Update 8/11/14: Key Matchups Early This Week
Fantasy Baseball 2014: Early-Week Waiver Wire Pickups
August 11, 2014
It’s Monday, and for us fantasy owners that means it’s time to start looking forward to the early-week matchups around the MLB. There are some prime opportunities out there for the enterprising owner, so with that in mind let’s take a look at some of the up-and-coming fantasy names who could make a big difference on your roster in the coming days.
Javier Baez, 2B/SS, Chicago Cubs: We’ve been talking about Baez an awful lot over the past several days, but then again so has everyone else. Heading into the Tampa Bay finale, he had hits in four of his first five games with four runs, three homers and five RBI in that span. He had two more hits and an RBI yesterday.
Baez will see soaring highs and crushing lows as he displays his all-or-nothing form this season, and it’ll be a rollercoaster ride. Get on board when Milwaukee comes to town today.

Jake Lamb, 3B, Arizona Diamondbacks: Lamb has been trending steadily over the past few days, so let’s take a closer look at his appeal and see what the fuss is about. He hit .318 with 14 homers in Double-A this season and seems to have worked himself into the favor of the D-Backs organization. He had two hits and a run yesterday in a nice outing.
Lamb should see regular at-bats as the club gets an extended look at him over at 3B as the season wanes. He’ll have his share of ups and downs, but could work out in Cleveland this week.
J.P. Arencibia, C/1B, Texas Rangers: Arencibia has been doing pretty well since he returned from his Triple-A demotion last month, and he’s gained plenty of attention because of it. He belted a homer in the Houston opener, but came up empty in the second and third games.
Arencibia’s BA still stinks, but he’s bringing it in the right direction lately. He makes a nice lower-end backstop or utility pickup as the team returns home to welcome Tampa Bay to town today.
Jake Arrieta, SP, Chicago Cubs: Let’s head on back to the North Side and check out Arrieta, who has earned some fantasy praise recently. He’s coming off an ugly outing (nine earned in five innings against Colorado), but seems primed for a bounce-back game.
Arrieta sports a 2.80 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP, so the Rockies debacle seems to just be a hiccup (and it’s tough to pitch at Coors). He’ll fare much better at home against Milwaukee today.
Wily Peralta, SP, Milwaukee Brewers: What a roll Peralta has been on lately. In his last five appearances, he’s 5-0 and hasn’t given up more than two earned runs in a start. His latest outing went 6 2/3 with one earned against San Francisco.
Peralta is one of the hotter names on the fantasy SP radar right now, so you should definitely give him a look if you’re in the market. He’ll head to Wrigley Field to take on the Cubs tomorrow.
